Limbaugh waves white flag in War Against Reality

Republican radio figure Rush Limbaugh announced Wednesday that, far from the Republican Party simply failing to turn out its base on Tuesday night, “we are outnumbered” now in the country, calling President Barack Obama’s overwhelming reelection victory “the trend” from now on.
“We have to face some truths, we have to face some reality,” he said. “We are outnumbered and we are losing ground. This was not a glitch. This is the trend. That happened last night. This is the trend. We are outnumbered. Whether you want to put it in terms of, ‘Have we lost the country or not?’ There’s no other explanation.”
Maybe it would help if you call someone a slut again?

Obama has a weather machine!
“So we got a hurricane coming. The National Hurricane Center, which is a government agency, is very hopeful that the hurricane gets near Tampa. The National Hurricane Center is Obama. It’s the National Weather Service, part of the commerce department. It’s Obama. The media, it’s all about the hurricane hitting next week, and they’re not talking about Biden, they’re talking about this Hurricane Isaac thing.”
-Rush Limbaugh, seeming to accuse Pres. Obama of sicking tropical storm Isaac on the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

Stories to Watch: 7/17/12
Had to skip the roundup to pick up a bike wheel that was in the shop. I broke a spoke on it the other day, which sucks. Everything's good now, though. Now here's the news...
Steve Benen points out that Mitt Romney's reaction to the Bain outsourcing issue has been pretty much wrongheaded. Instead of denying he had anything to do with it, he should be defending the practice -- which is not indefensible within GOP ideology. At a certain point, he's not going to be able to run from the charge anymore. If this is any indication of the way the campaign is going to operate in the future, expect Team Romney to pick a lot of wrong hills to fight and die on.
Something that is indefensible are House Republican priorities for education.
Extreme rightwing nutjob Tony Perkins met with Mitt Romney about selecting a running mate. Rep. Allen West's name came up. Apparently, Perkins learned absolutely nothing from the Sarah Palin fiasco. As a liberal, I can't think of a better Romney VP pick than that lunatic. He makes Michele Bachmann seem levelheaded.
At this point, the only Republican who doesn't think Mitt Romney should release more tax returns is Mitt Romney.
One of my senators is a complete idiot and a ridiculous boob.
What makes Minnesota's Republican Party different from other states'? When they tried to cheat in elections, they got caught.
Mitt's campaign of lies continues by taking an Obama quote wildly out of context.
Rush Limbaugh's a clown.
Finally, Harry Reid talks post-election filibuster reform.

The Cory Booker non-story, explained concisely.
Limbaugh's ratings post-slut comment were not so hot.
State of Hawaii to Arizona's birther Secretary of State: We are so tired of this bullshit. The email exchange behind all of this is well worth your time.
Facebook's shares aren't doing so well.
The conservative media start a race war. Luckily, it exists only in their imaginations. Bonus fun: Ed Kilgore on how incoherent and insane the whole thing is.
Obama says he's not letting up on Romney's Bain past.
Paul Ryan's stopped trying to make any damned sense at all.
Me talk like conservatives now.
Are squirrels possessed by gay demons?
Just a reminder; rightwing "historian" David Barton sells the purest horseshit known to man.
Finally, if the current escalation in numbers is any indication, by the time November rolls around, Mittens will be claiming to have created about a trillion jobs -- give or take a billion.

News Roundup for 5/9/12

Classy
-Headline of the Day-
"Limbaugh launches ‘babe’ outreach effort."
Faced with an ongoing boycott that's reportedly costing his affiliates millions, Rush Limbaugh has launched a counter-offensive -- a Facebook group called "Rush Babes for America." I'm not real clear on why they aren't "Babes for Rush" or what being for Limbaugh has to do with being for America, but whatever. At least he's finally figured out that something like "Rush Sluts for America" isn't going to fly. "Babes" is so much more classy and respectful.
And, according to the report, the whole effort has Rush's own brand of class all over it; "The group’s logo features a woman’s outline similar to the frolicking nude female figures cast in chrome on a trucker’s mud flaps. She is provocatively straddling Limbaugh’s 'EIB' seal, which stands for 'Excellence in Broadcasting.' The 'Rush Babes' Facebook profile photo features the logo printed on a yellow plastic 'Baby on Board' sign, emblazoned with the slogan, 'Rush Babe on Board.'" This is Trump-level class, to say the least, and is totally not sexist at all.
The fact that Rush is even trying at all shows you how badly the boycott is hurting. But I think he's probably going to have to try harder.
And maybe try being a little less of a sexist dick. (Raw Story)
-A somewhat less-than-proud moment in history-

(McClatchy)
-Bonus HotD-
"Texas school misspells own name for nine years."
These people set the standard for everyone else's textbooks.
Just sayin'. (Raw Story)

Grilled again. Ribs this time. And that's why the headlines are late. Now here's the news...
Could the push by the nonpartisan American Elect group to get on ballots nationwide help Republicans avoid being primaried by Tea Party nuts? That help may come too late.
The demographic groups Obama needs most are also the most optimistic about the economy.
Remember the Obama administration stopped using the phrase "War on Terror?" Remember how that was the worst thing ever? Yeah, about that...
Meanwhile, the War on Women takes to the airwaves; not a single female guest on any of this week's Sunday news shows. This after a week when so many issues pertaining to women have been so high profile.
Also in news from the WoW front; women return fire.
The person behind the Kony 2012 video seems to be a very, very strange individual. But wait, there's more.
Rush Limbaugh joins Twitter. This may not turn out well.
Bin Laden's plot to kill Obama panned out pretty badly, considering who's alive and who's dead these days.
Finally, what do laws designed to shame women seeking abortions look like in practice? Like this.

The weather is unseasonable, I've got some brats, and I'm grilling. Now here's the news...
Dueling incompetences: Rick Santorum didn't get his paperwork in on time and it could've cost him delegates in Illinois before a single vote was cast. But never mind; Team Romney failed to challenge, so the race is now competitive.
You'd think Wisconsin Republicans would be doing the very least they could to piss off voters ahead of the recall elections -- but you'd be wrong.
Even roughly one third of Republicans think Rush Limbaugh should be canned.
Breitbart's clown show desperately struggles to remain relevant. And fails.
Harry Reid scores a win against judicial obstructionism.
If Santorum can stay in until April 24, he's got a big win coming.
Although, that'll be hard if Rick keeps being such an incredible asshole.
The all but deceased Keyston XL pipeline would be more trouble than it's worth.
Finally, House Republicans' word ain't worth shit.

Unhinged celebrity madman Rush Limbaugh
-Headline of the Day-
"Rush Limbaugh’s ‘Slut’ Comment Controversy Proves It Has Staying Power."
According the the report, "On his show Tuesday, Limbaugh declared the 'slut' controversy all-but-over, claiming victory against Democrats and the 'Obama media.' The Republican kingpin pointed to the latest CBS/New York Times poll that shows Obama’s approval rating at 41 percent, its lowest point in his presidency, as proof that the uproar over his comments had 'backfired' against the left."
The name "Baghdad Bob" just popped into my head for some reason.
Anyhoo, the poll Limbaugh cited is looking more like bullshit every day. And even if it were dead on, how would that mean his slut-shaming scandal was over? It's like saying, "A new poll shows Americans hate spinach. I hate spinach. Therefore, I am beloved."
Meanwhile, back in reality, the New York Times reports that "new evidence emerged" that the ad boycott was having a deep effect. The boycott is clearly "costing Premiere Radio Networks -- the show's syndicator -- money, though the total amounts are unclear."
Further, majority in a Bloomberg poll out today believe that Limbaugh should be fired.
In the words of another embattled celebrity lunatic; "Winning!" (ABC News)

The GOP, in their own words...
...now here's the news...
Sarah Palin challenges Pres. Obama to a debate. It's puffed-chested grandstanding, because she knows it'll never happen in a million years. Which is good for Sarah, because she'd get her ass beat.
From the "ain't learned Jack" department: 4 out of 19 of the US's largest banks are unprepared for an economic meltdown and wouldn't survive without a bailout. Just another example of why "too big to fail" is "too big to exist" -- i.e., they don't have to be prepared because if the worst happens again -- and it will -- we'll have to bail them out or blow a whole in our economy. It's free, taxpayer-funded profit insurance. Bust the trusts.
I'm not sure I'm 100% clear on what this means, but Rush Limbaugh's syndicator is suspending "barter ads" for two weeks. Apparently, this is bad for Rush.
Neil deGrasse Tyson says hyperpartisanship has broken NASA.
Rick Santorum's decides it's time to go to war with Fox News. No, really.
Allen West doesn't seem to understand how time works. Not the Einstein space/time stuff, but the basic concepts of "past," "present," and "future." Effect before cause? Cool with him.
Republicans aren't putting together a coherent message on Afghanistan.
Another round of GOP primaries tonight. The big winner is expected to be Jesus. And Mittens, but mostly by not losing any ground.
Finally, Catholic League president Bill Donohue cements his reputation as an inexcusably awful, awful person.

I'm feeling lazy tonight. Frozen pizza it is. Now here's the news...
This could easily be the stupidest thing Sarah Palin has said in her entire life -- at least, publicly.
The tradition continues after Breitbart's death: Breitbart.com caught editing the context out of video again. I guess because that whole Shirley Sherrod thing worked out so well for them.
Ask yourself this; "What the hell is my tax money doing in Rush Limbaugh's pocket?"
You know, this whole Obama/Bell tape nothingness is making it a lot harder for the right to deny their own racism.
Are your gizmos acting goofy? This could be why.
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker ain't doing so hot in the promise-keeping department.
What could push gas over $5 a gallon? According to Exxon's CEO, Republicans' crazy rhetoric about Iran.
Meet the Republican Abortion Tax -- because Republicans hate taxes so much.
Finally, bad news for the GOP; the labor market recovery is a real thing. Rooting against America turned out to be a bad call.

You know, if it's going to be as warm next week as they're predicting, I might just break out the grill. The first time is always the best every year, because you've almost forgotten what it tastes like. Now here's the news...
Happy International Women's Day, everyone.
Scott Brown has a Romney problem.
The obvious has been confirmed; the birth control battle (and Limbaugh's boneheaded crusade to keep it in the headlines) is hurting Republicans with women and Independents.
64% of Americans support collective bargaining rights for public employees. Another GOP loser.
Rush Limbaugh tries to erase history. Meanwhile, commercial breaks for his show today featured minutes of dead air.
Rick Santorum, spammer.

News Roundup for 3/8/12

Boehner came up with a brilliant wedge issue
-- and now he's stuck with it
-Headline of the Day-
"Dems twist knife in birth control fight."
You hear about this Rush Limbaugh thing? Oh, it's terrible! He's yelling at ladies he doesn't even know and calling them whores and prostitutes, just because they want prescription drug coverage.
Turns out that this isn't just a sudden bout of Tourette's or something. It was brought about by a big Republican freak out over employers' coverage of birth control. It seems that employers can no longer force employees to live by the employers' religious beliefs and this is the worst thing ever!
Anyway, this is becoming a problem for Republicans, since the whole thing is stupid and everybody knows it. GOP leaders just want it all to go away (although Limbaugh isn't really playing along on that point).
So a bunch of Democrats, who also happen to be women, cooked up a plan. This thing isn't going to fade away, as GOP leadership hopes. Republicans are going to have to come out -- in public and on the record -- about how they feel about contraceptive coverage.
According to Greg Sargent, "In a letter to Speaker John Boehner — which was sent my way by a source — the 12 female Senate Dems, led by Patty Murray, are demanding that he drop his promise to hold a vote on the House version of the Blunt amendment, which has over 200 Republicans co-sponsors.
"The letter from the female Senators — which is timed to International Women’s Day — asks Boehner to pledge not to move any more birth-control-related legislation in the House."
See, the problem here is that the nuts are dug in on this issue because of Limbaugh. They think they have to defend him and in doing so have taken his whole slut/whore/bitch line as Gospel. If Boehner drops the issue, they're going to be ma-ad. But if he puts it up to a vote, everyone else will be. For the record, "everyone else" outnumbers the nuts by, like, a lot. This is what you call being between yer rock and a hard place. If Boehner let's the issue fade, a bunch of females get to shout "victory!" from the rooftops and piss off the GOP base. If not... well, that's pretty much like flooring it into the brick wall of public opinion -- in an election year that's already looking a little shaky for the Grand Old Party.
Of course, it wasn't the dem women who put Boehner between that rock and that hard place. Some guy named "John Boehner" did that.
They're just making sure he stays there for a while. (Plum Line)
-Cartoon time with Mark Fiore-
Hey kids, this week we're going to learn all about a Iran and the nuclear weapons program it doesn't actually have...

After all the brouhaha, TLC's All-American Muslim is cancelled after one season. It was pulled because it sucked -- turns out they really were just boring, normal midwesterners -- but expect wingnuts to claim some sort of boycott victory.
As big of a jerk in victory as he is in defeat, Newt Gingrich's Super Tuesday Georgia victory speech included an Obama "quote" pulled straight out of Newt's ass.
Andrew Breitbart's swan song continues to be a big pile o'nuthin'. Note to political celebrities: don't make empty threats, because you might die and then your fans will ask to see your cards.
Shelly Bachmann continues to be insane.
An entire ad agency drops Limbaugh.
Warn the neighborhood: STAR WARS IS GAY!! Won't someone please think of the children?
Finally, Newt seems to be writing off Kansas entirely.

Over 50 degrees here today. Beautiful, but very, very wrong. Now here's the news...
Tonight could be the night that Mittens is finally crowned Prom Queen. With the gap in Ohio now nonexistent and even moving Romney's way, we've finally gotten to the point where the numbers do now actually matter.
I saw a Facebook post about this last night, but it seemed too sparse to report on at the time; Lakota threaten to confiscate Keystone XL Pipeline trucks and equipment that cross their Pine Ridge lands in South Dakota.
Limbaugh's mouth is a gift to Democrats.
A Dane County Circuit Judge grants a temporary injunction against Wisconsin's new voter identification law. There is a problem, however -- that same judge signed the petition to recall Gov. Walker. So we'll see how long that lasts on appeal. Still, a speedbump's a speedbump and I'll take it.
Polling shows that people in Texas -- Texas -- want the state to continue funding Planned Parenthood. The GOP's War on Women is just blowing up in their faces all over the place.
Newt takes a nap.
Things that would never happen, but would be awesome if they did: a Limbaugh/Maddow debate.
Finally -- and this is no surprise, but more of a reminder -- Rick Santorum's been crazy for a while now.

Stories to Watch: 3/5/12
Pretty dull Monday here. Nothing much to report. Now here's the news...
Sooner or later, we're going to get the media to report that Limbaugh's underlying argument in the Fluke controversy -- that women are demanding "taxpayer-funded" contraceptives -- is a lie.
In the face of rising gas prices, 70 Democrats call for a remedy that would actually do something about it.
A radio station in Hawaii drops Limbaugh over his slut-shaming. Meanwhile, a petition calls for Armed Forces radio to follow suit. Your tax dollars may not actually be going to buy college "sluts" contraceptives, but it is going to Rush Limbaugh. Time to turn off that tap.
As of this writing, advertisers dropping Limbaugh have increased to 12. Meanwhile, Limbaugh himself doesn't know what to shut the fuck up and stop making things worse.
Here's a surprise: Mitt Romney's tax policies would be really good for some guy named "Willard 'Mitt' Romney."
The big winners in the GOP primary so far? Democrats.
The first installment of Andrew Breitbart's last big scoop turns out to be a big old heap o'nuthin'.
Right as he is, Don Imus is probably the very last person who should be talking smack about Rush Limbaugh.
Finally, Romney may put Santorum 2012 to bed in Ohio. Never would've guessed it a week ago.

News Roundup for 3/5/12

His common sense approach to issues has cost him nine advertisers so far
-Bonus HotD-
"Rush's 53 Smears Against Sandra Fluke."
In his half-hearted not-really-an-apology to Georgetown University student Sandra Fluke, Rush Limbaugh wrote, "For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke."
The problem here is that this "instance" was three separate shows over a three day period and that Rush personally attacked her -- i.e., said things about her personally -- at least 53 different times during that period.
I hope no one takes this the wrong way, because I don't mean this to be a personal attack, but Rush Limbaugh is a steaming bowl of crap. I mean that in only the nicest way, of course, and am only illustrating the absurd with absurdity. Mr. Limbaugh is not, after all, a literal steaming bowl of crap. It's merely a metaphor. He's as helpful and useful to a functioning society as a steaming bowl of crap and I just want highlight this undeniable fact.
At this point, Limbaugh's bleeding advertisers at an alarming rate, having just lost his 9th today.
Try not to take it personally, Rush. (DailyKos)
-I don't see how that's going to help-

After all, talking to Republicans is what got them so far gone in the first place. (McClatchy)
-Bonus HotD-
"Romney: 'In my administration, coal will not be a four-letter word.'"
I guess he plans to spell it wrong or something... (ThinkProgress)

Stories to Watch: 3/3/12
No tornadoes up here, just piles of heavy wet snow. I suppose I should be grateful for it, considering. Now here's the news...
Like all the rest of the top Not-Romney's, Rick Santorum's campaign structure is mostly either theoretical or imaginary. In fact, it's now looking like he may lose as many as 18 Ohio delegates before anyone has even voted -- and it's his own damned fault.
Latest polling shows that Gingrich still owns Georgia.
Blowhard Bill O'Reilly joins the rest of the morons pushing the false talking point that, under the contraception coverage rule, government will be paying for birth control. I guess because that's been working so well for Rush Limbaugh.
George Will declares the White House a lost cause for Republicans this go-round. He advises the party concentrate on congress as the way to make sure that Obama has "a substantially reduced capacity to do harm."
If you're in the mood for a surprise, watch for the Washington state Republican caucuses results tonight. Romney's polling ahead, but particulars of the caucuses mean it's hard to predict who's going to win. Even Ron Paul has a credible shot.
Looks like TV stations are the big winners in the Citizens United ruling.
More reason for spring fever: the Wisconsin recalls will probably take place in June.
Finally, you do know that Neil deGrasse Tyson is awesome, right?

News Roundup for 3/1/12

Something conservatives have apparently never seen
-Headline of the Day-
"Contraception: That’s Not How It Works, Guys."
Or a shorter headline might be "conservatives are morons."
See, it all started when some random street lunatic wrote a column for CNSNews titled, "Sex-Crazed Co-Eds Going Broke Buying Birth Control, Student Tells Pelosi Hearing Touting Freebie Mandate." Good on CNS for employing the mentally challenged.
However, other rightwing dopes couldn't (or more likely refused to) see the glaring problem with the piece -- birth control pills are a course of treatment. In other words, it doesn't matter how much sex you have, you'll always take the same schedule of pills. That's why the container/dispenser thing is a freakin' calendar.
But never mind the facts. According to Ed Kilgore, recent and fucking awful comments by Rush Limbaugh and others show "this idea that young women are having so much sex they are going broke and want taxpayers to bail them out seems to be solidifying into an actual, real-life meme (which is a bit astounding given what year it is)."
That's right, conservative blowhards are so intent on winning this contraception fight thing (that they just lost, by the way), that they're perfectly willing to come across as brainless idiots.
And I think I'm seeing how this works now; some conservative writes something fuckwitted, all the liberal blogs laugh at it, and the wingnut bloggers and talk show hosts crawl out of the woodwork to defend it. It doesn't make any difference how insane it is, liberals are wrong -- automatically. So if they say you don't use more BC if you have a lot of sex, then that's just nutty and you should laugh at the crazy libtards.
Still, Kilgore takes a shot at straightening this all out: "So, to all the people making this argument: Hi! Here’s a quick primer. This debate is mostly about the pill, not condoms. It’s not that every time a woman has sex she has to take a pill (though something like that also exists for emergency situations, and I’m aware that this enrages you). Rather, women get a prescription for these things called birth-control pills that are generally taken every day. So it’s a fixed prescription cost, and like many such costs, if insurance doesn’t cover it it can get out of hand really quickly because our medical system is an octopus riding a donkey riding a skateboard into a sadness quarry. But there is no proportional relationship between the amount of sex a woman has and the number of standard birth-control pills she consumes. Why, there are even women who aren’t sexually active who take the pill for medical reasons. Whoa!"
Nice try, but I don't think it's sinking in. (Political Animal)
-Cartoon Time with Mark Fiore-
Hey kids, Uncle Mark's here to explain the issues in the election this year! Yay!

Wish I'd thought of that headline. (Wonkette)
