Stories to Watch: 9/1/11

Still using Firefox 7 beta, still liking it. In fact, other than the slim memory usage, it seems identical to 6. Now here's the news...

Does Barack Obama have a secret plan to win the election by making millions of illegal aliens citizens so they'll vote for him? Wingnut Reps. Mike Coffman and Louie Gohmert think so -- and that should tell you all you need to know.

Mediaite's TOmmy Christopher thinks that John Boehner should resign for putting a Republican presidential debate a presidential address to congress. Maybe he should, maybe he shouldn't, but it's never going to happen in a million years. Roger Simon reports that the White House is "furious" with Boehner, though.

Everyone knows that Mittens Romney has a healthcare reform problem. But what most people don't know is that Rick Perry went above and beyond Romneycare, by proposing a joint healthcare plan with Mexico. I don't know enough about it to say whether it was a good idea or not, but it involves big gummint healthcare and Mexico, so the 'baggers should hate it.

Bonus fun: as Texas Ag Commissioner, Perry also praised Hillary Clinton's healthcare proposal. So Mexico, healthcare reform, and Hillary Clinton.

Condoleezza Rice simply does not care for Dick Cheney's book. NJ Gov. Chris Christie isn't a fan of Eric Cantor's hostage-taking on Hurricane Irene relief.

Surprise: it's illegal for unmarried couples to live together in Florida -- and state Republicans want to keep it that way.

The White House downgrades the 2012 jobs forecast.

Finally, so much for being the "sane Republican" -- John Huntsman's just-released tax plan is as insane and unfair as anyone else's in his party.
Joe Lieberman continues to be a jackass.

News Roundup for 9/1/11

Clinic protester blocks car
Turns out this is illegal

-Headline of the Day-
"Justice Department Tougher On Abortion Protesters."

People who yell at ladies outside women's health clinics are shocked to discover the President Barack HUSSEIN Obama isn't as willing to look the other way as the Oh-so-Christian GWB was. See, it seems there's a law against that sort of thing and people have been breaking it -- a lot. According to the report, "Under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, or FACE Act, the Justice Department's civil rights division has filed eight civil cases since the start of the Obama administration. That's a big increase over the George W. Bush years, when one case was filed in eight years."

The FACE basically makes it illegal to keep people from entering a clinic, but it also includes penalties for trespassing. Clinics have used the trespassing provision to create a "buffer zone" to keep the nuts away, but the Bush administration had a bad habit of not giving a fuck. Now the free ride is over.

"There's been a substantial difference between this administration and the one immediately prior," says Ellen Gertzog, director of security for Planned Parenthood. "From where we sit, there's currently much greater willingness to carefully assess incidents when they occur and to proceed with legal action when appropriate."

Now would seem to be a good time to point out another news story of the day: the US ranks 41st in the world in terms of infant mortality, which -- for the record -- is just awful.

Want to save some babies in real numbers? Put down the aborted fetus signs, quit the Republican Party, and become activists for real healthcare reform.

Just sayin'. (NPR)

Qadaffi gets some really solid advice from a fellow human rights violator.

Griper Blade: A Washington Scheduling Conflict is Not the Most Important Story Ever

One of the things I like to do with what I think of as my "long form" posts is kill two or more birds with one stone. It's often the case that when you look closely at an issue or story of the day, it relates to other stories and other issues. So many things are interconnected and politics (as much as politicians like to pretend otherwise) is a complex and faceted thing. It's nearly always the case that you can grab a story and make it at least two stories; "Man, this is dumb -- and the media sucks!" And yes, media suckage figures into this particular post.

So let's begin with that. Yesterday, President Obama announced that he wanted to address a joint session of congress on September 7. This wasn't going to work, there was a big Republican debate that night and we can't have the president dominating that news cycle. Of course, House Speaker John Boehner didn't put his refusal that way, but no one on Earth believes there was any other reason. The President pushed his case, but later dropped it. He'd address congress on the 8th.

OK, now here's where we get to the "and the media sucks!" part; this is the big story today. A scheduling disagreement. Yes, the GOP looks petty and self-serving. "Remember, this is just about picking the date for the speech. It's like arguing about the shape of the table before sitting down for negotiations. What possible chance is there for Washington to approve meaningful economic legislation if there’s a dramatic showdown over scheduling?" writes Steve Benen. "That's a rhetorical question; the chances are zero." But the bigger story -- that President Obama is going to unveil a major jobs plan -- is lost in the coverage of this minor palace intrigue.

Worse, it turns out we have a good idea what's in the plan the President will outline and media's ignoring this knowledge...[CLICK O READ FULL POST]
