Stories to Watch: 11/3/12
I wanted to be back on my regular blogging schedule today, but I had one last batch of pancakes to make and my sourdough starter was getting kind of weak. I think it became underpopulated from all the previous batches. Came back fine, just took longer than usual, so I had to skip the roundup. Now here's the news...
The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are back. It's going to be OK.
John Garver pleads with GOP voters not to vote for Rick Santorum. Why should you care? Garver is Santorum's nephew and the piece is in The Daily Caller -- which was founded by Tucker Carlson and Neil Patel, a former adviser to then-Vice President Dick Cheney. The weird part is that Garver wants you to vote for Ron Paul.
And did Rick Santorum really say he didn't want to make "black people's lives better?" Some are now saying he jammed a nonsense word into a sentence.
The problem with the above item: Rick doesn't deny saying it, instead saying, "I haven't heard it." Here's the thing; if someone told me I'd said something racist, I'd know right off the bat they were wrong. What's Rick's basically doing is saying, "I might've screwed up my dog-whistle and said what I meant -- I'd have to hear it to be sure." Whether he actually said it or not, he's not doing a lot to dispel the notion that he's a racist.
Gingrich says Mittens is a liar. Ignore the fact that he's right and remember how Newt swore he wouldn't resort to negative campaigning. By my count, there are two liars in this item.
The media is letting Romney run wild with false jobs claims.
Rick Perry develops Nazi Tourette's.
Pat Robertson's off his meds again.
Finally, Mittens aims to have this whole GOP primary thing wrapped up by February.

Stories to Watch: 10/2/11
Rick Perry's getting some flack today for a Washington Post article that reports his association with a hunting camp. The problem; the camp until fairly recently a big, black rock at the entrance with the word "Niggerhead" painted on it. Here's the thing: I have my doubts that this will bother anyone who was planning on voting for Perry. Expect the familiar "Oh, don't be so PC!" responses from the right if this story gains any steam -- although Herman Cain is already the exception to that rule.
In other Perry news: let's invade Mexico! No, really.
Police arrested more than 700 Occupy Wall Street protesters on the Brooklyn Bridge yesterday, as the protests spread to other cities.
Dick Cheney wants an apology from Barack Obama for all the mean (and accurate) things he said about the Bush administration's "War on terror."
The Herman Cain campaign begins shedding staffers, which is always a sign that everyone thinks everything's going just super-great.

Stories to Watch: 9/6/11
Hey, how was your Labor Day? Mine involved bratwurst, so it was perfect. Now here's the news...
Boehner and Cantor want a pre-jobs-speech meeting with the president to "discuss potential areas of bipartisan agreement," according to Politico. To translate that from Republican into English, they want to make threats, whine, and throw tantrums.
Is Rick Perry using wildfires in Texas to dodge debates? It sure seems that way. I mean, there's no logistical reason that he has to be in the state, just as there's no reason he has to be at the sites of the fires themselves. It's not like he's out there on the line, pitching in. Although, after what he's done to the fire departments in Texas, they could probably use the help.
One reason Perry might not be eager to debate; he might be forced to answer questions about why his state has the worst numbers for health insurance coverage in the nation.
This is what happens when you give Republicans everything they demand. Knock it off, Mr. President.
David Brooks continues to suck, be ridiculous.
Ezra Klein talks economy, history, Republicans, stimulus, and "motivated skepticism." Long story short, Republicans are freakin' nuts.
Mittens Romney rolls out his own big jobs plan, ahead of President Obama's speech on the same subject. You already know what's in it; it's got "GOP economic mumbo-jumbo" written all over it.
Finally, Dick Cheney is a man who is absolutely flawless in his own mind. In an interview with Wolf Blitzer, Cheney refused to admit to any mistakes at all in his eight years as VP. You know what this means, right? Getting hammered and shooting Harry Whittington in the face? Dick meant to do that.

Stories to Watch: 9/3/11
Woke up about 3:30 last night to a really impressive storm. Hard rain, wind, nearly constant thunder and lightning. The leading edge of the storm (which was probably what woke me) had gusts up to 60 mph. I stayed up for a while and watched it, then went back to bed. Woke up this morning do the whine of chainsaws. Nothing here, but it must've brought down branches all over the neighborhood. Now here's the news...
Paul Krugman writes that with the stimulus and aid to states run out, we're officially in the Age of Austerity so beloved by Republicans -- and that it's playing a big part in the current economic slowdown. Look at it this way; demand is people spending money. But people aren't spending money. And cutting government spending only reduces demand. It won't do a damned thing to help the economy, it'll do the opposite. Duh.
According to new documents released by Human Rights Watch, the Bush administration outsourced some of its "harsh interrogation" -- read "torture" -- to Moammar Qaddafi's goon squads. Someone needs to jam that fact in Dick Cheney's face while he's plugging that pile of BS he calls a book.
President Obama urges congress to pass the transportation bill, so we can continue to have something approximating a developed nation's infrastructure. Needless to see, this is the worst thing ever!
The editor-in-chief of a peer reviewed science journal resigns in disgrace. His sin? Publishing a "fundamentally flawed" paper by climate science denier Roy Spencer. This illustrates just how bad the deniers' "science" actually is.
Despite what you may have heard, not all libertarians are enamored of Ron Paul.
Black unemployment is now the highest it's been in 27 years.

Mediaite's TOmmy Christopher thinks that John Boehner should resign for putting a Republican presidential debate a presidential address to congress. Maybe he should, maybe he shouldn't, but it's never going to happen in a million years. Roger Simon reports that the White House is "furious" with Boehner, though.
Everyone knows that Mittens Romney has a healthcare reform problem. But what most people don't know is that Rick Perry went above and beyond Romneycare, by proposing a joint healthcare plan with Mexico. I don't know enough about it to say whether it was a good idea or not, but it involves big gummint healthcare and Mexico, so the 'baggers should hate it.
Bonus fun: as Texas Ag Commissioner, Perry also praised Hillary Clinton's healthcare proposal. So Mexico, healthcare reform, and Hillary Clinton.
Condoleezza Rice simply does not care for Dick Cheney's book. NJ Gov. Chris Christie isn't a fan of Eric Cantor's hostage-taking on Hurricane Irene relief.

I'm beta-testing Firefox 7. I've got to say, it kicks ass so far. The major improvement is a far more efficient memory footprint, which really makes a huge difference. This is a much more lightweight browser, without all the workhorse clunkiness I've come to expect from FF. Now here's the news...
President Obama schedules a major jobs address before a joint session of Congress for the same day that a Republican presidential debate is scheduled. One is a constitutionally mandated duty of the president, while the other will be a partisan event identical to a handful of other partisan events that will happen in the coming months. Guess which one John Boehner thinks needs to be rescheduled?
The fact that the president chose a joint session, rather than a television address, suggests his jobs plan will be a lot more ambitious that Republicans will like.
Headline in The Hill: "Cantor in tricky spot on disaster aid." Try, "Cantor stuck in hole he dug himself."
Illinois State Senator Deborah Mell marries another nice lady -- in Iowa. Illinois allows civil unions, but not same sex marriage. Here's hoping this is one step of many toward changing that.

Rainy and just a little chilly. Summer is slipping away. Now here's the news...
A lot of people are wondering if Rick Perry already has the nomination sewn up. Seems way too early to make this a two man race between Perry and Obama, but the media and punditry like things simple, so there's some attraction to (and bias for) that narrative. Taegan Goddard throws a monkeywrench into the narrative by pointing out that there are five post-Labor Day debates coming up and Perry sucks behind the podium. This is the allure of the undefined candidate; he's a big movie screen you can project what you want onto and he's whatever it is you want him to be. Then the debates come up, he opens his mouth, and spoils the fantasy.
People have been demonstrating against the Keystone pipeline for days now and the media won't give the issue the time of day. What's it take to get coverage? A headline like "Daryl Hannah Arrested at White House." Sucks, but I'll take it.
American University professor Allan Lichtman has called every election correctly since Ronald Reagan's reelection. This time around, his forecasting model picks Obama.
All Dick Cheney's book has accomplished is to remind everyone what an awful person he is.
Christopher Hitchens takes on Rick Perry's in-your-face religiosity. This doesn't go well for Rick.
Right-leaning pollster Rasmussen finds that 43% view the label "Tea Party" negatively, compared with 29% viewing it positively.
In related Tea Party news, Alan West doesn't want Michele Bachmann drilling in the Everglades. Unrest in the 'bagger house. Meanwhile, noted non-witch Christine O'Donnell gets kicked out of the Tea Party.

Stories to Watch: 8/24/11
I missed the roundup today because I got into a fruitless war with the mods at Reddit's /r/politics subreddit. I tried to submit a story about elections in Libya and it was rejected as "not American news." It's a whole big thing, which you can check out here if you're interested. That subreddit used to be awesome, but lately they've been adding pointless restrictions and, worse, getting all anal-retentive about them and now it often sucks. And let's not even talk about their spam filter; since when is the New York Times a spam site? Anyway, my day sucked. The moral of the story here is don't waste time on pointless arguments. Now here's the news...
Gallup polling shows Rick Perry leading the GOP field by a pretty wide margin, ahead of Mitt Romney 29% to 17%. Michele Bachmann is now yesterday's news. Keep in mind, at this point people don't really know who Rick Perry is. He's just the new name in the race.
Obama's attempts at centrist solutions are costing him the middle.
And about those Libyan elections. If transitional team leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil is right, they'll happen in eight months. Do the math, that'll be right in the middle of the '12 US presidential campaign. Yeah, /r/politics -- no way is that a US political story. How silly of me.

On Dick Cheney, the Newly-Invisible Man
There was a fun exchange on ABC's This Week between Steny Hoyer and John Boehner. The subject was the Deepwater Horizon disaster and the Bush administration's love for deregulation.
I thought that question tied in well with this video from MNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann, where Kate Sheppard discusses a piece she wrote for Mother Jones:
When will we stop blaming the Bush administration? About the same time that their idiotic decisions stop having catastrophic consequences. In other words, not for a long, long time, Rep. Boehner. Get used to it.
HOYER: ...The psychology of neglect in terms of regulatory oversight that was pursued in the Bush administration, which led to the banking failure, insurance prices going way up, and oil companies thinking they could do whatever they wanted because the "drill, baby, drill" crowd, all they wanted them to do was to drill. So I think John's right. I think the regularly psychology of the last administration was not appropriate, and there was mistakes made in this administration, as well.
BOEHNER: How long are you going to blame the Bush administration?...
