Grilled again. Ribs this time. And that's why the headlines are late. Now here's the news...
Could the push by the nonpartisan American Elect group to get on ballots nationwide help Republicans avoid being primaried by Tea Party nuts? That help may come too late.
The demographic groups Obama needs most are also the most optimistic about the economy.
Remember the Obama administration stopped using the phrase "War on Terror?" Remember how that was the worst thing ever? Yeah, about that...
Meanwhile, the War on Women takes to the airwaves; not a single female guest on any of this week's Sunday news shows. This after a week when so many issues pertaining to women have been so high profile.
Also in news from the WoW front; women return fire.
The person behind the Kony 2012 video seems to be a very, very strange individual. But wait, there's more.
Rush Limbaugh joins Twitter. This may not turn out well.
Bin Laden's plot to kill Obama panned out pretty badly, considering who's alive and who's dead these days.
Finally, what do laws designed to shame women seeking abortions look like in practice? Like this.

Stories to Watch: 2/10/12
I was hoping to get something done today, but I suffered a setback. It won't happen until next week. So all weekend, I'll keep thinking there's something I need to get done, because I'm like that. Now here's the news...
Occupy CPAC!
Also from CPAC; wingnuts think swing voters are just as crazy as they are.
Rick Santorum is dumb.
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker comes damned close to committing theft.
Now that the Obama administration has announced a compromise on contraceptive coverage and religious organizations, Santorum jumps the shark on the issue: No contraceptive coverage for anyone!
House Republicans predicably have decided to be assholes about the Obama compromise, while Democrats see this as playing to their advantage. Republicans = the "no birth control" party.
Cable news reinforces what I already believe -- it sucks.
Finally, Rick Santorum takes the lead in polling and I just couldn't be happier.

Stories to Watch: 12/28/11
I made a ham and cheese frittata last night and tonight it's grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. Ham is probably my favorite leftover. Now here's the news...
Rick Santorum moves closer to becoming the next GOP fad candidate. Erick-Erick is less than impressed.
In case Rick is the next flavor of the month, let me be the first to remind everyone that he's a clown who tried to claim that we'd found those WMD in Iraq.
This is fun; Newt Gingrich blames his failure to get on the Virginia ballot on "one guy" who turned in about fifteen hundred fraudulent signatures. Gingrich had been paying a bounty for signatures, so he's basically admitting that "free market" incentives encourage corruption.
And it's time once again for reporters to explain how the Iowa caucuses work. Let me save you a little time; they're stupid and practically designed to keep the casual voter out of the primaries.
Rick Perry desperately struggles to be seen as the most acceptably crazy candidate, but no one bites.
A book put out by the Girl Scouts tells kids not to believe everything they hear and to check Snopes.com and Media Matters to see if stuff they find on the internet has been debunked. Needless to say, this is the worst thing ever. Can't have sweet little girls finding out that Fox News is a bullshit factory.
The Obama administration has a disturbing love for the killing machines known as drones.
Finally, even as Hispanics find Obama's deportation record appalling, they figure he beats the alternatives.

Stories to Watch: 10/23/11
More new Walking Dead tonight. Gotta get my zombie fix. Now here's the news...
Flailing former frontrunner Rick Perry decides that the road to the White House runs through flirtation with the lunacy of birtherism.
More mass arrests of Occupy Chicago protesters.
Recovering gunshot victim Rep. Gabrielle Giffords appears to be gearing up for reelection.
A 7.3 earthquake in Turkey may have left somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 dead.
Hillary Clinton calls out Mitt Romney for his criticism of the way the Obama administration has ended the Iraq War.
At least one Tea Party congress critter understands that he represents the 99%.
Polling confirms the tag "do-nothing congress" has stuck.
Finally, Herman Cain is a Washington outsider in the same way that I'm a tree sloth. For the record, I'm not a tree sloth.

Stories to Watch: 9/13/11
Leftovers tonight, which is actually awesome. It's like a smorgasborg inside my fridge. BBQ chicken? Grilled pork chops? Pasta with sauce and cheese? Various and sundry veggies? All of the above. Now here's the news...
How bloodthirsty and insane were the 'baggers at CNN/Tea Party Nation-sponsored GOP debate last night? So bloodthirsty and insane that it freaked out Rick Perry.
On a related note, Michele Bachmann's anti-HPV vaccine paranoia ("it makes kids retarded!") leaves no doubt that she doesn't even belong in congress, let alone the White House.
Poverty in the US is now up to 1 in 6 households, with unemployment being a driving factor. Clearly, austerity isn't going to help much. In fact, Krugman points out that we're already seeing austerity measures fail before our very eyes.
The White House wants Republicans to pass the entire Jobs Act -- unless of course, they don't want to. Which would be OK with the White House too. Way to stand your ground, Obama administration.
A woman of the not-white persuasion attempted to fly on an airline on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Long story short; not only did we totally overreact after 9/11, we're still doing it.
So far, the GOP debates have been good for Democrats; crazy enough for the base is probably way too crazy for the general electorate.
Finally, Rand Paul is a jackass.

News Roundup for 9/1/11
Turns out this is illegal
-Headline of the Day-
"Justice Department Tougher On Abortion Protesters."
People who yell at ladies outside women's health clinics are shocked to discover the President Barack HUSSEIN Obama isn't as willing to look the other way as the Oh-so-Christian GWB was. See, it seems there's a law against that sort of thing and people have been breaking it -- a lot. According to the report, "Under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, or FACE Act, the Justice Department's civil rights division has filed eight civil cases since the start of the Obama administration. That's a big increase over the George W. Bush years, when one case was filed in eight years."
The FACE basically makes it illegal to keep people from entering a clinic, but it also includes penalties for trespassing. Clinics have used the trespassing provision to create a "buffer zone" to keep the nuts away, but the Bush administration had a bad habit of not giving a fuck. Now the free ride is over.
"There's been a substantial difference between this administration and the one immediately prior," says Ellen Gertzog, director of security for Planned Parenthood. "From where we sit, there's currently much greater willingness to carefully assess incidents when they occur and to proceed with legal action when appropriate."
Now would seem to be a good time to point out another news story of the day: the US ranks 41st in the world in terms of infant mortality, which -- for the record -- is just awful.
Want to save some babies in real numbers? Put down the aborted fetus signs, quit the Republican Party, and become activists for real healthcare reform.

Bachmann recounts the time Jesus and Abe Lincoln signed the Declaration of Independence, making Sharia law illegal in the US
-Headline of the Day-
"Michele Bachmann Constantly Answering Her Own Questions Wrong."
"If you had to take a test where you also got to make up all the questions, would you probably still answer all of them wrong?" asks Wonkette. "Yes, you would, if you are lunatic Bible-humper Michele Bachmann."
See, PolitiFact checked 24 Shelly Bachmann statements and found that 23 of them were wrong. Among the crazy-assed things she's said; President Obama "released all of the oil from the strategic oil reserve," that John Quincy Adams was a founder, and that the Obama administration has only issued one drilling permit. Add in her expression of admiration for this John Wayne something-or-other from Waterloo, Iowa and you start to get the idea that Shelly and reality aren't real tight.
Keep in mind, these are all statements she made of her own volition. Wonkette wonders, "What if someone tried some 'gotcha' questions on Michele instead, would she accidentally get those right?"
Worth a shot. She couldn't do any worse. (Wonkette)

News Roundup for 5/19/11
President Obama
-Headline of the day-
"The 'death hug' strategy."
If you've been paying attention to early Obama campaigning, you've noticed something a little strange -- the president has been praising possible '12 GOP opponents. Mitt Romney got a nice thank you for laying the groundwork for healthcare reform, as did Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels. And John Huntsman got a big round of applause for all the awesome work he did in the Obama administration.
You see what's happening here, right? According to the report, this "sort of political maneuver has colloquially become known as a 'death hug' for the frequency with which Obama and his allies have used it against Republicans." See, it seems the Obama administration looked out at the nutjobs who'll likely make the difference in the GOP primary and decided to use them. It's fiendish, in a fun sort of trollish way; don't paint your opponents as to far to the right, congratulate them for being so far to the left. Since "the left" has become synonymous with reality, this will leave only the frootloops unpraised. Then sit back, watch the crazies pick off the candidates you least want to run against, and win easily next November over the Bachmann/Cain ticket.
"Imagine it's 2003 and George W. Bush is praising certain Democratic presidential candidates, noting key areas of policy agreement with those candidates, and in one case, noting that one of the candidates was a member of his administration," Steve Benen explains. "Do you think this might affect the attitudes of Democratic primary voters about those candidates? I do."
Like all the nuttiness you've whipped up since Obama was elected, GOP? I hope so, because you're gonna eat it. (Political Animal)

Stories to Watch: 4/10/11
Sunday. Baking bread. What else is new? Now here's the news...
The left isn't extremely pleased with the budget deal. Drastically reducing spending means reducing demand during an economic recovery. Not the smartest thing anyone's ever done. The New York Times' Nicholas Kristof is especially harsh; "It’s unclear where the adults are, but they don’t seem to be in Washington. Beyond the malice of the threat to shut down the federal government, averted only at the last minute on Friday night, it’s painful how vapid the discourse is and how incompetent and cowardly our leaders have proved to be." He lays the blame both on Democrats and Republicans -- with the lion's share going to the GOP. Krugman points out that the deal -- since it includes extending tax cuts for the top one or two percent -- actually increases the deficit and that the Obama administration seems to be following the same political strategy that served them so poorly just last year.
Todays "The GOP's 2012 field keeps getting more ridiculous" news: Sarah Palin dips a toe in the birther waters.
Meanwhile, the White House is pleased that nutjobs like Donald Trump poll well with Republican voters. "I saw Donald Trump kind of rising in some polls and given his behavior and spectacle the last couple of weeks, I hope he keeps on rising," adviser David Plouffe said in an interview. "There is zero chance that Donald Trump would ever be hired by the American people to do this job."
Way, way, way after it matters, the Wisconsin State Journal runs a story examining Gov. Walker's claim that the state is "broke." The verdict: it depends on who you ask. If you ask Walker, we're broke. If you ask any objective observer, we're fine. This is the "two sides to every story" crap taken to the extreme -- they examine a claim by Republicans by asking experts and Republicans whether it's true. Result: no consensus, so who even knows? It's a big Scooby-Doo mystery. And way to strike that iron while it's still hot, guys. Still, Republican claims don't come out looking very good in the end.
GOPer: "Stop being mean to Big Oil!"
Finally, Eric Cantor gives away the GOP's not so secret plan: " We'll protect today's seniors and those nearing retirement, but for the rest of us, all of us, who are 54 and younger, I know the programs [i.e., Medicare and Social Security] are not going to be there for me when I retire."

Cooking chicken. You can't have any. Now here's the news...
Reuters breaks news that the Obama administration has secretly ordered the arming of Libyan rebels. Needless to say, this opens up a whole can of worms.
In an effort to show their trying to avoid a government shutdown, House Republicans introduce the Government Shutdown Prevention Act. Of course, these are Republicans, so bill titles always mean the opposite of what they say.
Republicans are all about local control, so it only stands to reason that a congress critter from Ohio gets to run the DC school district.
Wisconsin Rep and former reality TV star Sean Duffy's complaint about low congressional pay prompts the GOP to try to erase the statement from history. Luckily, they failed. Sean Duffy will forever be remembered as the guy who couldn't make it on $174,000 a year.
Just because he's a private citizen now doesn't mean that former Senator Russ Feingold is going away.
More fun with local control: NJ Republican Rep. Chris Smith takes a trip to end all abortion in Kenya -- even in the case of a threat to the life of the mother -- because that's a super-important thing for America, I guess. It'd be business as usual for a photo-op-seeking GOPer trying to shore up his anti-choice street cred, except he went there on the taxpayers' dime. Way to cut that deficit, GOP.
Finally, Tennessee moves to all but outlaw science in the classroom. Welcome to the 19th century!

I'm stuck on how to open here. It's 32 degrees outside. Thirty-freakin'-two degrees Fahren-freakin'-heit. I'm speechless. Now here's the news...
The Obama administration is studiously avoiding calling military action in Libya "war." While most are painting this a political stance, others see it as a legal one.
One thing that no one is asking -- surprisingly, I think -- is how this whole "non-war" is going. If Juan Cole is to be believed -- and I think he is -- it's going gangbusters.
Just reminder: John Stossel is a lunatic.
Is Trump's possible presidential run a PR bluff to grab headlines (and ratings)?
The GOP's ongoing war on workers goes federal, with a bill that would cut off food stamps for families where a worker goes on strike. Want to fight for a fairer wage, better working conditions, or better benefits? Fine. Then the baby starves.
I'm tired of following every stupid, hate-filled, un-American thing the American Family Association's Bryan Fischer says on a nearly daily basis. Seriously, the guy is just an awful, awful human being. We have all the proof of that we'll ever need.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott wants to drug-test state employees. The problem is, it's already been ruled unconstitutional and drug-addled state employees haven't actually been a problem. So why would he want this? Did I mention Scott owns a string of clinics that do employee drug screenings? I probably should have.
Finally, remember when Gov. Scott Walker told a guy he thought was David Koch that he'd thought about hiring some "troublemakers" to make pro-worker protesters look bad? An Indiana prosecutor took that idea a step farther and emailed Walker to suggest he get some stooge to take a potshot at him. Seriously, stage an assassination attempt. Not surprisingly, Carlos Lam is not an Indiana prosecutor any longer, although he probably has a great career ahead of him as the next Karl Rove.
