Giffords to fight NRA’s fire with fire
“The NRA does best in times of normal politics when most people are not paying much attention,” Robert Spitzer, a political science professor and gun policy expert at the State University of New York College at Cortland, told Reuters.” But this could be a game-changing moment because of the sustained national attention being given to this issue.”A new gun control group led by Gabrielle Giffords, the former U.S. congresswoman wounded in a Tucson shooting rampage, wants to raise $20 million for the 2014 congressional elections, matching the National Rifle Association’s spending in last November’s elections, the group’s treasurer said on Wednesday.
Giffords and her husband, former U.S. astronaut Mark Kelly, have turned to Houston trial lawyer and Democratic donor Steve Mostyn to act as treasurer. He gave $1 million of his own money to help kick start a campaign launched on Tuesday calling for what Giffords and Kelly describe as common-sense measures to curb gun violence.
The move marks the entry of the high-profile couple, both gun owners, into a heated national debate over gun control fueled by the massacre of 20 children and six teachers at a Connecticut elementary school last month.
“We’re just getting things started, but I’ve had conversations with a dozen other large political donors who have worked with me on other issues in the past, and I’ve had a good response,” Mostyn told Reuters.

Newt Gingrich is a freakin' windsock. First he was against the Paul Ryan plan, no he's trying to be the most vocal defender.
Meanwhile, Tiffany's line of credit to the Gingrichs is starting to look a little bribe-y.
Ed Schultz calls Laura Ingraham a "rightwing slut," which is both unfair and inaccurate. She's a rightwing fuckwit. It pays to be precise with the nomenclature.
Jared Loughner, whose shooting spree killed several and severely wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, is found mentally incompetent and unfit to stand trial.
The GOP engages in cannibalism. It's never too early to begin eating your own.
Obama's approvals hit a 16-month high, with 53% approving and 41% disapproving.
Most in Wisconsin favor a recall of Gov. Scott Walker, an election Scooter would -- unsurprisingly -- lose. Voters would also rather have Democrats control the state senate. Dark days ahead for Fitzwalkerstan.

Stories to Watch: 4/27/11
Pancakes for dinner. Life is good. Now here's the news...
Proof positive that no matter what President Obama does, Republicans will find a way to criticize it: Eric Cantor -- whose party makes up the vast, vast majority of birthers -- thinks Obama shouldn't be wasting his time with birtherism.
And, of course, the birthers don't care. It's not about proof, it's about faith.
House Republicans vote to restrict collective bargaining rights, because that's working out so great for them in the states. Fun fact: the party that claims to be all about jobs still hasn't put together anything close to a jobs bill -- just crap like this to make working people's jobs worse.
Lefty radio host Nicole Sandler raises a ruckus at an Allen West town hall in Florida, gets arrested. Imagine if the ideologies were reversed and it was Limbaugh walking out in handcuffs. Free speech is a two-way street, guys. You had your disruptive town halls and cheered them.
Donald Trump thinks Americans should buy less "crap" from China -- so don't buy anything with a Trump label.
Big news overshadowed by the birth certificate -- CIA director Leon Pannetta's bumped up to Defense Secretary and Gen. David Petraeus is taking his place at the CIA. Lefties will likely be unhappy when that sinks in.

Finally, we have the first images of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords post-shooting. The video is extremely unclear -- she's barely more than a silhouette -- yet sad nonetheless.

Stories to Watch: 4/8/11
I made pancakes today. I'm guessing you didn't. I win. Now here's the news...
Cutting funding for Planned Parenthood is the most important thing in the world. So important, in fact, that the government must be shut down until Republicans get their way. You know what might be a good idea here? Including some women in the budget negotiations. Seems to me they might have some valuable insight into issues of women's health services. Ezra Klein examines what it is that PP actually does and it turns out that it's not really a lot of abortions.
On the bright side, the GOP has agreed not to shoot another hostage -- the EPA.
Conservatives -- and especially 'baggers -- are aghast as Shelly Bachmann gives up on the budget fight. This is being seen as a sign that a deal may be nearly hammered out -- if Bachmann folded, it's because someone told her to shut up and fold.
All of which is good news for John Boehner's DC residence. Protesters have threatened to dump their garbage at his place, since a federal shutdown would interrupt the capital city's trash pickup.
James Fallows -- like myself and a lot of other people actually paying attention -- is sick and tired of hearing how "brave" and "serious" Paul Ryan is for writing conservative economic-fantasy porn.
Statistical whiz Nate Silver says that the magically appearing 7,500 votes for incumbent Supreme Court Justice David Prosser looks more like incompetence than mischief (that's a question I asked earlier today, BTW). Others aren't so convinced of that. Either way, it strikes me that one way to really fire up people about recalls is to have something like this happen at this particular time. If things go poorly for the Wisconsin GOP in the near-future, the party should go looking for Kathy Nickolaus's head.

Finally, a press conference by GOP women goes very, very badly.

News Roundup for 2/18/11

"Ohio's turn to revolt: Thousands flood statehouse over anti-union bill."
Whatever it is we've got in Wisconsin, it's catching. As Ohio considers a bill that's basically identical to Wisconsin's union-buster, Ohioans turn out at the statehouse to give them the business.
It's off to a nice start. The Columbus Dispatch reports the initial number as 3,500, while a local Tea Part counter-protest gathered an anemic 200.
"This bill is a partisan assault on working families and does nothing but punish workers and hurt the middle class, plain and simple," says Tim Burga, president of Ohio's AFL-CIO. "This bill would destroy the middle class because the working families this bill affects not only provide vital services, but put money and resources back into their communities, which support local merchants and other small businesses."
Turns out a lot of people think screwing up the economy is a bad idea. Makes you wonder why Republicans did so well last year. (Raw Story, with video)

Meet Tucson firefighter Mark Ekstrum, America's biggest and most gaping asshole, who refused to answer the emergency call after the Giffords shooting -- because he didn't agree with her politics. According to the report, Ekstrum's refusal "may have slowed his Tucson Fire Department unit's response to the incident that left six dead and 13 wounded."

Stories to Watch: 2/12/11
Kind of a boring weekend around here so far. This time of year, the days keep getting longer, but all the additional sun doesn't seem to accomplish anything. We're on the downhill slope of winter, to be sure, but it sure doesn't feel that way. Now here's the news...
Rightwing fears are seeming more and more unfounded as the Egyptian military says they'resticking with the country's treaty with Israel and protesters reaffirm that, yes, this is all about democracy.
Just a reminder: the Obama administration is awful on matters of privacy and domestic surveillance.
Senator Gabrielle Giffords? Let's wait and see if she's still up to being Representative Gabrielle Giffords, OK guys?
House GOP finally settle on $100 billion in cuts. Problem is, it's never going to happen.
Rep. Peter King earns another Profile in Courage award by pissing himself over Muslims again.
Finally, Republican Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin threatens to sic the National Guard on state workers who might get mad about his plan to dismantle their union. The same day Mubarak steps down, Walker steps up. Hooray for Republican freedom!

Stories to Watch: 2/9/11
It. Is. Cold... Period. Now here's the news...
That didn't take long. Hours after a scandal broke involving Craigslist, photos, personal ads, and his own marriage, Rep. Christopher Lee -- a NY Republican -- has resigned. It's kind of weird, because it sounded like it was embarrassing, but survivable. You wonder if there's more to it or whether Lee just didn't have the guts to face constituents after the story broke.
Meanwhile, Sen. Jim Webb announces he won't seek reelection.
House GOP suffer another embarrassing loss. This time, in trying to take back money paid to the UN. On their previous loss, Adam Serwer largely agrees with me -- the influence of the Tea Party on the final vote count is being wildly overstated.
House Republicans who took the dare and swore off the commie, gummint-controlled health insurance offered to members are starting to get what all that reform stuff was all about. Welcome to the real world, mad tea partiers.

Finally, labor joins in with protests in Egypt by staging a general strike.

Stories to Watch: 1/19/11
Using Chrome more now, but I've got to say that my opinion of scribefire for the browser has changed. I started out thinking it was just OK, now I've concluded it's worthless. Right now, I'm blogging directly to blogger's editor, which I haven't done for a long time. This time, I've suped it up with Zemanta, so expect a lot more tags at the bottom of the post (as if you care). Now here's the news...
Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennesee says that GOP lies about healthcare reform resemble the work of Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels. True enough, but maybe this isn't the best time to bring that up. Conservatives -- who have no problem comparing a certain Democratic president to Hitler -- were, as always, quick to play the victim card. It's possible to point out that Republicans are shameless liars without tempting Godwin. Just sayin'.
Hillary won't commit to a second term as Secretary of State. Expect the baseless CLINTON WILL RUN AGAINST OBAMA! speculation to start any second now.
In what may be a sign of progress, Gabrielle Giffords will be moved from "University Medical Center to Houston’s TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation hospital, which specializes in helping people recover from brain injuries."

Finally, the most trusted name in news? PBS. Fox News is in fourth place, but that's down 16 points from last year's PPP TV news poll.
