News Roundup for 8/2/11

Crying child
Jonah Goldberg reacts to news that hippie-commie Nazi Marxist America-hating terrorist-sympathizers are calling conservatives names

-Headline of the Day-
"To Hell with You People."

Jonah Goldberg had a "leave Britney alone!" moment today, when he'd had just about enough of everyone comparing Tea Party Republicans to terrorists. Just because a bunch of ideological zealots took the American economy hostage and threatened to blow it up if their demands weren't met, people keep making that comparison. It's just so unfair!

You know what's fun here? Goldberg is the author of Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning, which -- as you might imagine from the title -- says some not very nice (or even true) things about the left.

One reviewer said that Liberal Fascism was "a howl of rage disguised as intellectual history" that could be boiled down to one simple argument: "I know you are, but what am I?" And what can you expect of a book that argues that Hitler's vegetarianism is proof that all hippies are Nazis?

So, yeah Jonah, you go ahead and whine about how people are being so mean to conservatives. You tell everyone in the media to go to hell. Then you go cry yourself to sleep, tucked under the covers of your own shameless hypocrisy. (National Review)

Stories to Watch: 7/31/11

Got out to a street fair yesterday. Bands, beer, and burgers. Pretty hot though, but that's what all the beer was for. Now here's the news...

Another day, another debt limit deal. I don't suppose it would surprise you to learn that this one sucks.

***

At this point, it doesn't seem like anyone's considering any deal that doesn't fuck up the economy. My advice for Democrats; preview the consequences for the American people. Get someone in leadership out there, preferably the president, to explain that this is all a very, very bad idea. "The deal we struck today is crap. It's awful. Expect unemployment to rise, consumer demand to drop, and the gap between the rich and everyone else to widen further," the Democrat could say. "Republicans made it impossible to get a deal any less stupid and destructive and, bad as it is, we believe that default would be worse -- slightly. When this whole thing goes south, you know who to come looking for. Republicans broke your economy. Today we were only able to prevent them from doing even worse. And when Republicans try to spin this into being Democrats' fault -- and I guarantee they will -- remember what I say to you today; we told you so."

Sure it's passing the buck, but taking ownership of this economic flateartherism would be numbskullery.

***

The most popular solution to debt and deficit? Soaking the rich -- by 72%. So, of course, that's totally off the table.

Why are Republicans so fascinated with Nazis?

When is an act of terrorism not worth freaking out over? When some nut firebombs a Planned Parenthood.

Speaking of arson, it could be that the dirtiest of dirty tricks has been pulled in the Wisconsin recall fight.

Finally, a glimpse at the sort of jobs Republicans think America needs. It's not pretty.

News Roundup for 3/22/11

Movie still of cheesy monster rising from ocean
Return of the Oil Monster

-Headline of the day-
"Oil Spill Washes Up On Louisiana Coast As New Drilling Authorized."

According to the report, "emulsified oil, oil mousse and tar balls from an unknown source were washing up on beaches from Grand Isle to West Timbalier Island along the Gulf of Mexico, a stretch of about 30 miles." Wait, "oil mousse" is a thing?

This follows an earlier report that what appeared to be an oil plume -- coincidentally 30 miles long -- was spotted in the Gulf of Mexico. But don't worry, said the Coast Guard, it was just "goop" kicked up by dredging and that no one should worry about it. They say they tested the plume and found "only trace amounts of petroleum that were well below the state of Louisiana's standard for clean water."

"Goop" is apparently also a thing.

So, is it oil or isn't it? If it isn't, then where did all this oil mousse come from?

Whatever... Spill baby, spill! (ThinkProgress)

-Like we don't have enough to worry about-
Super-ultra-mega-church pastor and general all-around rightwing nutjob Rick Joyner has a warning for America -- the earthquake in Japan will "unleash demonic Nazism" on us.

See, it works like this: "the demonic principalities responsible for Nazism in Germany were going to attempt to take over the United States and, according to the prophetic visions of Joyner and others, it would happen amid a massive economic collapse that would start with an earthquake in Japan. As such, given the devastation caused by this earthquake, Japan will need to call in the American debt to rebuild their nation, unleashing an economic catastrophe in the US and thereby opening the door for this demonic Nazi force to take root."

Yeah, absolutely none of that made any damned sense to me, either. But don't worry, when none of this stuff actually happens, his flock won't notice. Followers of con men never do. (Right Wing Watch, with video)

News Roundup for 1/25/11

Would it surprise you to learn this guy's a dick?

-Headline of the day-
"Rep. Peter King: '80 Percent Of Mosques In This Country Are Controlled By Radical Imams'."

GOP Rep. Peter King of New York went on the Laura Ingraham Show, reached into his pants, and pulled a completely made-up statistic out of his butt. This being talk radio -- and, specifically, Ingraham's radio show -- such behavior is encouraged.

Asked how many mosques in America were "infected" with "radical jihad sentiment," Petey answered that "over 80 percent of mosques in this country are controlled by radical Imams."

His source for this claim? I mentioned it already. It was his ass. According to the report, "For his part, King has said he is willing to be called a 'bigot' if that's what it takes to continue his witchhunt into Muslim American communities."

Mission accomplished there, Pete. You're a bigot.

Now, how do you feel about being called an asshole? (Think Progress)

Stories to Watch: 1/21/11

Man, it's freakin' cold here. Single digits. Luckily, there are really only a few days like this every year, but we always seem to remember the whole winter being this way. Now here's the news...

Fox News' Megyn Kelly claims that no foxbots ever compare anyone to Nazi. Media Matters calls bullshit on her.

Legalize democracy! Do it now.

Dana Milbank declares February "Palin-free" and asks people to pledge not to talk about her for a month. This seems like an invitation to America's favorite attention whore to do something outrageous. Facebook trollery ahead.

Boehner declares that banning federal funding of abortion -- which, for good or ill is already illegal -- is the House's "highest priority." Jobs? Meh...

Compromise is the word of the day, but House progressives warn Obama that cuts to Social Security are not on the table.

Mittens Romney knows his base is not the Tea Party.

What will the White House do about jobs? A blue ribbon panel. That always works so well.

Finally, GOP Rep. Paul Broun is really paranoid.
