Stories to Watch: 6/12/12

You know how after a long, hard-fought primary campaign, the candidates always come together to show a united front? Yeah, about that...

As always, Republican lies contradict each other.

George Zimmerman's wife is no more trustworthy than he is.

Dem analysts tell the Obama campaign that he needs to take off the kid gloves. It's a story that Buzzfeed gets 180 degrees wrong.

Rep. Louis Gohmert said something stupid again.

David Brooks wrote something stupid again.

The circus chimps on Fox and Friends broadcast something stupid again.

ALEC loses another corporate sponsor.

Finally, a reminder: Jonah Goldberg is a hack.

Stories to Watch: 5/10/12

Honey mustard BBQ pork chops. Now here's the news...

When it comes to the military, conservatives are Very Serious People, right? That's why the House's day was spent banning same-sex weddings on military bases and making sure the Pentagon gets more money than it wants, by cutting things like food stamps and Medicaid.

Good news! The world doesn't end in 2012 after all. Go ahead and eat your hoarded canned goods.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio's got some deep, deep trouble with the Justice Department over prisoner abuse. This makes the people at Fox News sad.

But seriously, the charges against Arpaio are really, really bad. Like, police state bad. If even a fraction of these are true, the guy's a fucking monster.

Mittens old classmates do not remember him fondly. Words and phrases that pop to their minds: "really negative memories," "evil," and "like Lord of the Flies."

Neocons in the military are much, much worse than you'd imagined.

Finally, it's always fun to tear apart that hack Jonah Goldberg. Alex Pareene does it especially well.

News Roundup for 8/2/11

Crying child
Jonah Goldberg reacts to news that hippie-commie Nazi Marxist America-hating terrorist-sympathizers are calling conservatives names

-Headline of the Day-
"To Hell with You People."

Jonah Goldberg had a "leave Britney alone!" moment today, when he'd had just about enough of everyone comparing Tea Party Republicans to terrorists. Just because a bunch of ideological zealots took the American economy hostage and threatened to blow it up if their demands weren't met, people keep making that comparison. It's just so unfair!

You know what's fun here? Goldberg is the author of Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning, which -- as you might imagine from the title -- says some not very nice (or even true) things about the left.

One reviewer said that Liberal Fascism was "a howl of rage disguised as intellectual history" that could be boiled down to one simple argument: "I know you are, but what am I?" And what can you expect of a book that argues that Hitler's vegetarianism is proof that all hippies are Nazis?

So, yeah Jonah, you go ahead and whine about how people are being so mean to conservatives. You tell everyone in the media to go to hell. Then you go cry yourself to sleep, tucked under the covers of your own shameless hypocrisy. (National Review)

-And now the good news-
It's not like it's all bad news.

Chin up! (TruthDig)

-Bonus HotD-
"Debt Ceiling Delay Cost Taxpayers $1.7 Billion In The Last Two Weeks."

And it's all deficit spending. Huzzah for conservative fiscal responsibility! (ThinkProgress)

Stories to Watch: 5/24/11

Bratwurst on the grill tonight. Envy me. Now here's the news...

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke before congress today. Congress' reaction to the speech is probably best described as obsequious. An extremely good take the congressional reaction here. And good take on the actual policies here and here.

Also on the subject of Israel in American politics; The Onion nails it.

If I wanted to start naming a "Jackass of the Day," I might start with GOP Rep. Billy Long, who represents Joplin, MO. Of course, there's also Eric Cantor. Or maybe Peter Fonda. GOP Rep. Pete DeGraaf? See, that's why I don't do it -- too many jackasses.

Jonah Goldberg reinforces my opinion of him by wishing with all his little heart that Paul Ryan would run for president. This is a dumb, dumb man.

There's a special election in New York's 26th congressional district today and it's looking like the Republican is assuming she's not gonna win it.

Herman Cain continues to make a complete fool of himself.

If he ran for president today, Texas Gov. Rick Perry would not win Texas. Not even close.

Despite the economy, violent crime is at its lowest in 40 years.

Finally, is this just the worst candidate imaginable or is my imagination not creative enough?

Stories to Watch: 3/23/11

More crap weather. I don't even want to talk about. Now here's the news...

RIP Elizabeth Taylor. Weird fact: she outlived the guy who wrote the obit at that link by six years. Sick fact: the Westboro hate cult announced plans to picket her funeral, because of her work raising awareness about AIDS. On the optimistic side, they often make these announcements and then wind up being no-shows, so it may never happen.

Madison's The Capital Times has a good article on the upcoming Prosser-Kloppenburg race for Wisconsin's Supreme Court. Gov. Walker's union-busting has shaken up the political landscape here and this will be the first election held after it. We'll see whether the shaking up affects conservative gains in the state the same way an earthquake affects an Etch-A-Sketch drawing, but the article makes a couple points clear; Kloppenburg supporters are fired up and Prosser -- once considered a shoe-in -- is awfully nervous. Go JoAnne!

A new Pew poll finds that President Obama would easily beat off a generic Republican. In response, National Review's Jonah Goldberg hints that the time has come to call out the GOP circular firing squad.

One of my senators, Ron Johnson, is a real jackass.

Maine Gov. Paul LePage wants to remove a mural depicting labor history -- from the lobby of the state's Department of Labor.

Apparently stung by being so completely wrong on such a consistent basis, Bill Kristol decides to stick to making the easiest, most obvious calls in the world.

Finally, according to a senior British commander, Ghaddaffi's air force is now non-existent. Which, of course, means we're done enforcing the no-fly zone over Libya. Right? Right?

I guess we'll see.
