Court ends Arpaio’s racial profiling

Arizona Republic: A federal court ruling that found that the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office engaged in racial-profiling has managed to do what Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s critics have sought to do for years.

The agency no longer patrols the county looking for undocumented immigrants, and Arpaio’s work-site enforcement raids have come to an end — at least for now.

A hearing scheduled in U.S. District Court today will help determine exactly how Arpaio’s agency trains its deputies and enforces laws in the future.

But, for now, the ruling has forced the Sheriff’s Office to not only alter its approach to immigration enforcement but also change the way the agency describes its work. For the past three weeks, deputies who encountered undocumented immigrants have rescued the border crossers as part of a humanitarian effort instead of arresting them on illegal-immigration charges.

“I’m in a Catch-22 here,” Arpaio said. “I would have to lean toward saving the lives of the people here illegally in the desert. I can’t call ICE anymore.”
Yes, that is a terrible thing. It’s almost like the court believes that the purpose of law enforcement is to protect lives and property. When will these activist judges realize that it’s Sheriff Joe’s job to grandstand on immigration in order to keep getting reelected by slackjawed racists?

Stories to Watch: 5/10/12

Honey mustard BBQ pork chops. Now here's the news...

When it comes to the military, conservatives are Very Serious People, right? That's why the House's day was spent banning same-sex weddings on military bases and making sure the Pentagon gets more money than it wants, by cutting things like food stamps and Medicaid.

Good news! The world doesn't end in 2012 after all. Go ahead and eat your hoarded canned goods.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio's got some deep, deep trouble with the Justice Department over prisoner abuse. This makes the people at Fox News sad.

But seriously, the charges against Arpaio are really, really bad. Like, police state bad. If even a fraction of these are true, the guy's a fucking monster.

Mittens old classmates do not remember him fondly. Words and phrases that pop to their minds: "really negative memories," "evil," and "like Lord of the Flies."

Neocons in the military are much, much worse than you'd imagined.

Finally, it's always fun to tear apart that hack Jonah Goldberg. Alex Pareene does it especially well.

Stories to Watch: 4/30/12

Actually a pretty slow news day. Kind of having to scrape the sides of the jar here. Anyway, here's the news...

Team Obama revives the "Party of No" messaging.

Breitbart's death, birtherism, and Joe Arpaio are now featured in a single conspiracy theory. That ought to save the wingnuts some time.

A Florida task force, handpicked by Gov. Rick Scott, comes back with recommendations for changes to the "Stand Your Ground" law. Not surprisingly, they don't amount to much more than PR. The law should be repealed entirely, not tweaked around the edges.

Rep. Joe Walsh, America's favorite deadbeat dad, continues to be a horse's ass.

For those of you keeping track of these sort of things, a mere $13 million will buy you the governor of Wisconsin.

A bigoted conservative meme dies: Muslims aren't fans of al Qaeda. The line will still wander around as a zombie though. That's what conservative memes do.

Finally, dems have Republicans on the ropes over this War on Women and they aren't letting up any time soon.
