Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad fires a torpedo at a potential Steve King senate campaign

Political Wire: Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R) appeared to suggest that Rep. Steve King (R-IA) “either is not running or should not run for the U.S. Senate,” Radio Iowa reports.

Said Branstad: “I really believe that Iowans want somebody that will serve in the Senate that will be an Iowa problem solver, not another congressman. You know congress is a mess. We’ve seen them spend a trillion dollars more than they take in every year and so the Democrats have decided, ‘Well, we’re going to send up another congressman.’ That’s the last thing we need is another congressman in the United States Senate.”
My money’s on Branstad saying King “should not run.” You don’t say that congress critters like Steve King suck and everyone hates them if you’re a big fan of the man. It looks a lot more like he’s trying to sabotage any potential King campaign.

And why wouldn’t he? Steve King is Michele Bachmann in boxer shorts. The guy is rightwing loon and everyone in the GOP with any brains predicts he’d become the next Todd Akin if he ran for Senate. It would most likely be a disaster. He’d blow the seat and embarrass the party at the same time.

It’s not that “the last thing we need is another congressman in the United States Senate,” it’s that the last thing Republicans need is this congressman on the campaign trail, being himself.

Stories to Watch: 2/29/12

Kind of dreary around here. Of course, about a third of the nation is under one huge storm cloud. Seriously, look at the map. Now here's the news...

Rick Santorum's Google problem becomes less of a problem.

The unfortunate Rep. Steve King of Iowa isn't a big fan of Griswold v. Connecticut. States have the right to ban contraceptives -- because that's some sort of massive blow for freedom. Or something. The guy never makes any damned sense to me.

An Illinois congressional candidate is a neo-nazi who believes the Holocaust never happened. Naturally, Art Jones is running as a Republican.

There are mosques everywhere -- run!

Contrary to what you might have heard, Mitt Romney does have at least one rightwing nutjob supporter.

Rush Limbaugh is a jackass. No wonder even Republicans hate him.

Here's a fun game: Rick Santorum or Ayatollah Khamenei?

In delegate math, Mitt Romney's narrow win of Santorum may be a tie. Also at that link, "roughly 10%" of the primary voters were Democrats and Santorum "won the most liberal and most conservative voting blocs in the state, while Romney had the edge with everyone else." Sounds like Operation Hilarity impacted in a big way and Rick's numbers are artificially inflated by mischief. Almost pulled it off guys and you still gave Mittens a black eye. Helluva job.

Finally, a big win for Obama's foreign policy in North Korea.

News Roundup for 10/5/11

Rep. King
Rep. Steve King believes there's just way too much voting going on in America

-Headline of the Day-
"Rep. Steve King Pines for the Days When Only Male Property Owners Voted."

A high-ranking member of the House Conservative Moron Caucus, Rep. Steve King, used his time on a hearing on a Balanced Budget Amendment to long for the good ol' days when only male property owners could vote.

"As I roll this thing back and I think of American history, there was a time in American history when you had to be a male property owner in order to vote," Steve said. "The reason for that was, because they wanted the people who voted -- that set the public policy, that decided on the taxes and the spending -- to have some skin in the game."

See people who rent or are women don't have that "skin in the game," because "47 percent of American households don't pay taxes, 51 percent of American wage-earners don't have an income tax liability." According to the report, "King made the disclaimer that he was only making 'a historical observation' about the era of property-owner-only voting, but the rest of his dialogue made it seem as though he thought the Founding Fathers might have been on to something."

Here's the problem with his "historical observation" -- it's not historically accurate. Or, at least, apt. The income tax didn't actually exist until 1861, when it was first implemented to pay for the Civil War. The only people running around in stockings and powdered wigs at that point were lunatics, not founders.

The thing is that the only people in the US nowadays who aren't paying taxes are those who never make or spend money. Everyone has "skin in the game" and if King wants to pretend that the only tax in America is the income tax, then its his prerogative as an American to pretend he's an even bigger idiot than he already is. Can you speed that artificial brain project up a bit guys? Steve King needs one now. (Talking Points Memo)
