Adventures in selective reading by gun fanatics
Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, said Sunday that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was wrong to assume that the government had the right to place limits on the Second Amendment. ”He was not speaking from a constitutional perspective,” Pratt said.
“The amendment does provide it’s own degree of scrutiny: It says, ‘shall not be infringed,’” Pratt said on “Fox News Sunday” after host Chris Wallace read a quote from a 2008 case in which Scalia wrote that the Second Amendment was not “unlimited.”
First off, when you’re to the right of Antonin Scalia, you’re way the hell and gone out in Lala Land.
Second, the amendment also says “well-regulated,” which you’ve got to assume means… well… regulated pretty well. Regulations are legal limits and Scalia is right; the Constitution does allow limits on gun ownership — in fact, it specifically requires them.

According to Justice Antonin Scalia, women have no guaranteed right to legal abortion or contraception, because liberty.
Romney's doing a lot of damage trying to prove he's not a diplomatic lightweight. Seriously though, this is some profoundly racist stuff -- and completely divorced from reality.
Harry Reid is not a fan of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission -- specifically, an Obama nominee by the name of William Magwood. From the sound of things, Harry's on the right side of this one.
After Aurora massacre, opponents of gun control measures lose five points in polling. That's the good news. The bad news is that, at 47% pro-control and 46% anti-, it's basically tied.
It's official: bullshit media aids the GOP.
Politico finally figures out that voter ID laws are about stealing elections, not preventing that theft.
When it comes to providing Olympic coverage, NBC sucks.
Newt Gingrich reminds us all that he's an anti-Muslim nutjob.

Stories to Watch: 6/25/12
Four days smoke-free.
Brian Beutler pours cold water on the punditry's fun by pointing out that handicapping the decision on the Affordable Care Act is pointless horseshit. Ezra Klein concurs.
The ACLU are not fans of the Supreme Court's ruling on Arizona's "Papers Please" law.
However, total jerks are fans of Paul Ryan.
Antonin Scalia's shameful political rant, disguised as a dissenting opinion -- it's factually challenged enough to pass as a Limbaugh segment.
Republican voters actually love the stuff in the Affordable Care Act. This could be a problem for the GOP in the immediate future. Healthcare reform in the abstract is easy to attack. But if it goes down in the Supreme Court, everyone's going to find out what they've lost -- and they aren't going to be very happy.
On the subject of today's Supreme Court and the state of democracy, James Fallows kicks ass and takes names.

The US approves its first nuclear plant in decades. This "despite objections from the country’s top regulator that safety issues raised by last year’s Fukushima meltdown were not fully addressed." So that sounds like a great and totally responsible idea. What's the worst that could happen?

Federal and state governments accept a $25 billion settlement from big banks over mortgage and foreclosure fraud. Ezra Klein has a collection of reactions to the news. My take, if you don't break up the big banks and send con men to prison, this is just going to happen all over again eventually.
Gutless Democrats allow themselves to be played by Republicans. What else is new?
No Child Left Behind begins to wither on the vine. And none too soon. Cutting funding to schools that are struggling? It was a bass-ackward, stupid idea from day one.
The GOP vs. the Voting Rights Act of 1965. I'm telling you, they're gunning for democracy itself.
Finally, Nancy Pelosi calls on Americans to rise up against Stephen Colbert.

Obama to stress centrism in State of the Union address, because wandering down the middle of the road's been working so great for him. Mitch McConnell preemptively refuses to follow suit.
Clarence Thomas has himself a little ethical -- and legal -- problem. But c'mon, can we really expect a Supreme Court Justice to know ever jot and tittle of the law?
In related news, Thomas and Scalia share another ethical problem.
Vermont may eliminate "corporate personhood."
WikiLeaks has released only 1% of the diplomatic cables they have. So much for the idea that they're just publishing stuff willy-nilly.
Finally, it's an ego explosion: Michelle Bachmann to deliver her own State of the Union response, regardless of who her party has chosen to do it.
