‘Pro-life’ pundit literally celebrates the return of coathanger abortions

Following the passage of Texas’ oppressive abortion bill, RedState.com founder and top conservative pundit let loose the tweet above. The link leads to a site selling coathangers. “Ha ha! You lose! Go kill yourselves with coathanger abortions now!"

This is what passes for the “pro-life" position on the right.

Of course, there’s nothing pro-life about this. There isn’t even anything pro-birth here. But there’s an accidental exposure of truth here. And the truth is that abortion laws are just another form of slut-shaming. It’s behind so many of the arguments. Remember Foster Friess, Rick Santorum’s billionaire backer? Yeah, he got a lot of unwanted attention for this little exchange with Andrea Mitchell in 2012:

MITCHELL: Do you have any concerns about some of his comments on social issues, contraception, about women in combat, and whether that would hurt his general election campaign would he be the nominee?

FRIESS: I get such a chuckle when these things come out. Here we have millions of our fellow Americans unemployed; we have jihadist camps being set up in Latin America, which Rick has been warning about; and people seem to be so preoccupied with sex. I think it says something about our culture. We maybe need a massive therapy session so we can concentrate on what the real issues are. And this contraceptive thing, my gosh, it’s [so] inexpensive. Back in my day, they used Bayer aspirin for contraceptives. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn’t that costly.

MITCHELL: Excuse me, I’m just trying to catch my breath from that, Mr. Friess, frankly.
The subject here was contraception coverage, but the underlying argument is the same: women who have sex, but want to avoid pregnancy, are sluts. The issue is their fault — not the fault of the men trying to regulate their bodies. If these gals would just keep their legs together, why it wouldn’t be an issue, now would it? The same reasoning was behind Rush Limbaugh’s slut-shaming of Sandra Fluke.

Pregnancy is seen as the consequence of a moral crime. Abortion laws, like the arguments against contraception coverage, are about punishing dirty little sluts — not about saving lives or protecting women somehow. Erick-Erick gleefully imagines sluts paying the ultimate price for their round-heeled ways. He sees coathanger abortions as women getting what they deserve and completely ignores the fact that the “unborn baby" he’s supposedly so interested in saving goes to the grave with the mother. He clearly doesn’t give a damn about the fetus; this is about getting the woman with an unwanted pregnancy to take what she’s got coming to her.

If you check his twitter feed, you’ll see Erickson’s since tried to weasel out of his tweet by pretending he was mocking people who used coathangers to protest the bill, but this makes no sense, since the protests have already happened. And why would protesters who already had coathangers need to bookmark a site selling coathangers? And in what way would this be mocking them anyway? What could the punchline possibly be, exactly?

No, Erick Erickson was celebrating a victory in the Republican War on Women by telling pro-choice women to go die like the sluts they are. It’s impossible to take it any other way. The rest of Erickson’s anti-choice crowd have to be pretty angry with him right now. He let the cat out of the bag. None of this is about “saving babies," it’s all about hating women.

"Pro-life" my ass.

News Roundup for 10/11/11

Erick-Erick
100% dumb

-Headline of the Day-
"About those '53 percent.'"

You might've heard that some "conservative activists" [read "paid corporate whores"] have put together a site they call We are the 53%. Erick Erickson is one of the brainiacs behind this thing and, since he's a clown, it's all very stupid. Basically, it's a way to make fun of another blog -- We are the 99% -- where people share stories about how they're either barely getting by or are not getting by at all. This seems the obvious thing to do, because these 99-percenter stories are all from people who've been wrongfully evicted or developed cancer or had their jobs shipped overseas or had their better-paid spouse die on them. Since conservatives are assholes, they're going to kick these people when they're down. And get a good chuckle out of it at the same time.

Anyhoo, as I said, it's all very stupid. Many of the people on the site claiming to be the 53% (i.e., people who pay income tax) clearly aren't, but aren't smart enough to figure that out. In other cases, they're chumps who are getting fucked ("I work 60 hours a week on a salary that pays me for 45 hours"), but think it's somehow "unamerican" to try to do anything to get unfucked. These are deeply, deeply dumb people.

But, as I said, Erick-Erick is a clown, so a big part of the fun comes from his story of hardship (he's a professional pundit and a CNN contributor); "I work three jobs. I have a house I can’t sell. My family insurance costs are outrageous. But I don’t blame Wall Street. Suck it up you whiners. I am the 53% subsidizing you so you can hang out on Wall Street and complain."

To which Steve Benen responds that this is all crap. It's "rather foolish" to argue Erick-Erick works three jobs and, even if he did, it'd be even crazier to say it was because he has to. Not blaming Wall Street for a weak housing market caused by securitized debt in the form of "toxic assets" is even crazier. And, of course, his "family insurance costs" are something Erick-Erick literally gets paid to keep high, by virtue of being a professional opponent of healthcare reform. In short, Erick-Erick is -- as I keep saying over and over -- a freakin' clown. At this point, saying he's a hack would be giving him too much credit.

What Benen doesn't point out -- and I'm surprised he doesn't -- is that Erik-Erik and all these bobbleheads on his site just spent the last three years bitching about the economy. But now that someone comes along and places the blame where it belongs... Why, there's nothing wrong with the economy! Everything's great! Stop whining! (this "reasoning" is rampant on the right; see my handy infographic here)

"If there are any actual 'whiners' in this scenario," Benen asks, "shouldn't the label go to millionaires who shudder at the idea of paying Clinton-era tax rates?"

Yes. Yes it should. Quit your bitching, Erick-Erick, and pull your goddam weight. (Political Animal)

Stories to Watch: 7/24/11

Having pancakes for dinner -- again. It's been too hot to use the oven, so I'm stuck with two choices; find some way to use sourdough starter when I feed it or throw a cup of the stuff down the drain. Waste not, want not, so bring on the sourdough pancake brinner. Now here's the news...

Apparently, Boehner and Obama are back at the negotiating table. It's not exactly good news, however, since ABC News reports that any deal would likely "face strong opposition for House Republicans opposed to increasing taxes and Democrats opposes to entitlement cuts."

ThinkProgress looks at the way the right jumped on the "IT'S MUSLIMS!" train in the Norwegian terrorist attacks. Not surprisingly, they all look even stupider than normal. Breitbart's idiocy shines out especially brightly for me.

Things get worse for possibly unstable Oregon Democratic Rep. David Wu, with allegations of sexual assault.

It's Wedding Day in New York. Congratulations.

Norwegian police are investigating a possible second gunman in the terrorist attack.

Is America in danger of a Norway-type attack? We've got the same kind of nuts, so judge for yourself -- Exhibit A.

Finally, RedState's and CNN's Erick Erickson declares Jews to be extremely likely to become terrorists. It wasn't the argument he was trying to make, but Erick-Erick's a ridiculous boob and his logic is always flawed, so you wind up with collateral damage. Seriously, this guy is just awful at spin.

Stories to Watch: 5/9/11

I thought I was going to have those javascript animated buttons up at the Tumblr blog this weekend, but it turned out not to be the weekend I imagined it would be. It was better. Which means I was out, not getting work done, pouring beer into my face -- like a good Wisconsinite. The buttons can wait. Now here's the news...

Rightwinger Byron York looks at the entire 2012 GOP presidential field and finds a winner -- none of the above.

Newt Gingrich announces that he'll announce his candidacy on Wednesday. You read that right, he's announcing his announcement. This isn't the actual announcement, this is the announcement of the announcement. I think I've got his campaign motto: "Gingrich '12: Watch This Space."

Erick Erickson strangles Jon Huntsman's candidacy in its crib, because Erick Erick the most important little pundit ever.

Donald Trump once allowed a black man to win a game show, which proves he's the least racist person on Earth. Unfortunately for The Donald, said black man does not agree with that assessment.

Polling shows that the Republican Party splitting into two parties is becoming more realistic as time goes on.

Krugman breaks with political fashion by using the word "elite" correctly.

Sen. Rob Portman is not the most popular man on campus... at least, not at the University of Michigan Law School.

Finally, in the special election to fill the NY-26 seat, Jane Corwin continues to sink after backing Paul Ryan's fantasy-economics porn.

Stories to Watch: 2/10/11

Coming up on the weekend, which means I have to think about how to use my sourdough again. I hate throwing starter down the drain, so maybe I'll take another shot at pancakes -- the last batch was a little thin, but good, and I think I know how to correct my recipe if I need to again. Then again, I could always make a loaf and freeze it. Or give it away. Now here's the news...

For a supposedly brilliant guy, Barack Obama can sometimes make some seriously fuckwitted decisions.

Mubarak trolls Egypt by starting a rumor that he's going to resign, scheduling a big speech, then announcing he's not going to resign. No wonder they want him gone. He's just a dick. Needless to say, wingnuts believe this is all Obama's fault.

Sarah Palin proves that hypocrisy isn't lethal by calling Rick Santorum "uninformed" and a "knuckle dragging Neanderthal" without dying.

Donald Trump, trying to appear as if he has the political chops to make a presidential run, plays wonk by making the easiest call in the world.

Erick Erickson will no longer be silent about the Homosexual Menace residing within the Republican Party itself! Now would be a good time to point out that CNN pays this guy to say stuff on teevee, like he's a smart person.

The Economist dumps all over the GOP's economic plans and -- in particular -- their pretend budget genius, Paul Ryan.

Nancy Pelosi isn't putting up with the GOP's plans to attack a woman's right to choose.

Rep. Peter King is crazy.

After the wingnuts throw a hissy, House Republicans again promise to make $100 billion in cuts -- with no freakin' clue how to get there.

Finally, Rand Paul gets booed at CPAC for suggesting that maybe we're wasting money on a cold war military, when there isn't an actual cold war going on. And Cheney and Rumsfeld get booed for being warheads. The base is splintering.

Stories to Watch: 1/24/11

Finally broke down and decided to try my hand at sourdough. All the instructions for starter I'd found sounded like a lot of work. And then I found this. Turns out you can force yeast into dormancy by refrigerating it. You can even freeze the starter and wake it up later when you need it. Yeast are hardy little critters. Now here's the news...

RIP Jack LaLanne.

Rahm Emanuel is ordered off the mayoral ballot in Chicago by an appellate court for not meeting the residency requirements. It's actually kind of a bullshit decision -- and that opinion comes from someone who doesn't think much of him.

President Obama's polling bounce is putting possible opponents off their game.

Republicans take credit for job numbers they had nothing to do with.

Hopelessly insane blogger and paid CNN pundit Erick Erickson says "mass bloodshed" may be necessary if something isn't done about Roe v. Wade. Funny how the religious nuts always forget the "pro-life" part of being "pro-life," isn't it?

Michele Bachmann's presidential maybe-campaign is off to a marvelous start as she declaring the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence wonderful, then going on to say "the very founders that wrote those documents worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States." No Shelly, they didn't.

There may be a coming revolt among the 'baggers if Republicans insist screwing with Social Security. In related news, Republicans are eager to screw with Social Security.

Texas Governor Rick Perry is an empty suit.

Finally, Tim Pawlenty has released a campaign ad for his as-yet unannounced presidential bid. It goes way over the top in trying to make the boring Minnesota guy seem inspiring and winds up leaving us wondering it an asteroid is about to collide with the Earth.
