News Roundup for 1/5/12

What the Romney tax plan looks like to the middle class

-Headline of the Day-
"Romney Plan Raises Taxes On Lower-Middle Class, Cuts Taxes On Wealthy."

Mittens is the 1%. If you ever doubted that, check out his new tax plan, which can best be described as a massive middle finger to anyone who isn't fabulously well-to-do. Basically, it works like this; the less you make, the larger your tax hike. Conversely, the more you make, the bigger your tax cut.

According to the report, "The Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center crunched the numbers — part of a series of analyses the group has done of the GOP candidates’ tax proposals — and found that the plan constitutes a major tax cut for wealthy Americans. But compared to today’s rates, Romney proposes effective tax increases for people making less than $40,000."

Meanwhile, the "average millionaire would thus pay $145,568 less in taxes in 2015 than they do today." Relying on the poorest to make up for the wealthiest just plain doesn't work -- mostly because math has a liberal bias -- and this makes Romney's plan a "a budget buster, meaning greater deficits or deep cuts to federal programs."

So, if you're not a bazillionaire and you're planning to vote for Romney, you're a chump. Plain and simple. (Talking Points Memo)

Stories to Watch: 7/16/11

It's going to get hot up here. Well, that is, hot for up here. We're talking mid to high 90s. We're not used to this stuff. We'll puff up like the pasty white Pillsbury Doughboys most of us are. So get used to hearing us complain a lot about that. Now here's the news...

More details emerge about Team Obama's reelection fundraising. If Republicans don't read that and worry, they should.

Speaking of Obama, he threw Elizabeth Warren under the bus last night. No word on who will be nominated in her place to lead a consumer protection bureau. Of course, anyone who's not a rabid teabagger won't have any easier time being confirmed, so it's hard to see the point in dropping Warren.

House GOP leadership turn to Rep. Paul Ryan to talk some sense into freshman on the debt limit. Probably not the worst idea ever.

Wow. The race to recall Wisconsin Democratic state Senator Dave Hansen just got really, really weird. The Republican running against him, David VanderLeest, has to deny smoking crack and a history of domestic abuse. The problem is, there's a paper trail. Also, when denying you're a crack head, saying "I don't smoke rock" is less than convincing. Vanderleest's interview with Wisconsin Public Radio's Joy Cardin is here.

What's more important than raising the debt ceiling for House Republicans? Stopping the evil that is curly light bulbs.

The woman behind the News of the World phone hacking scandal, Rebekah Brooks, gets a £3.5m golden parachute. That's about $5.6 million.

Murdoch's ties to British PM David Cameron are almost certain to cause Cameron trouble.

Finally, the Ninth Circuit Court upholds a ban on discharges under DADT.

Stories to Watch: 7/6/11

I barely slept last night. I don't know what the problem was, but all I did was toss and turn. Hoping for better luck tonight -- I'm certainly exhausted enough. Now here's the news...

GOP Sen. Jeff Sessions complains that asking the wealthy to pay their fair share is "rather pathetic." Greg Sargent calls the Republican position on the issue "surreal."

The Ninth Circuit Court reaffirms that DADT is unconstitutional and reinstates a ban on its enforcement anywhere.

The rightwing blogosphere is horrified to learn that ACORN is getting taxpayer dollars -- despite the fact that there's no longer any such thing as ACORN. Hey, if you can't freak out over imaginary problems, what can you freak out about?

President Obama calls Republican hostage-taking like it is.

John Boehner's new rules for the House of Representatives are turning that chamber into a hopeless mess of incompetence and error. There's a reason why Republicans think government doesn't work -- they suck at getting it to run.

Finally, Swing state voters agree with liberals that the wealthy should pay more. No doubt, Jeff Sessions finds them "pathetic" as well.
