Chuck Grassley’s racist reason for voting against the VAWA

ThinkProgress:

Republicans have offered a number of reasons why they oppose the Violence Against Women Act. Some think it’s unconstitutional. Others argue that it’s just a meaningless bill with a patriotic title.

On Wednesday, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) added a new one: Native Americans supposedly aren’t capable of holding fair trials.

Last week, Grassley was one of just 22 senators—all Republican men—who voted against reauthorizing VAWA. During a town hall meeting in Indianola on Wednesday, a woman asked him to explain his vote. Grassley responded that the legislation is unconstitutional, a belief shared by at least five of his colleagues.

Since the Constitution guarantees citizens the right to a trial among a jury of peers, Grassley reasoned that white men would be deprived of their rights if those who were accused of violence against Native American women had to appear in a tribal court. “On an Indian reservation, it’s going to be made up of Indians, right?” Grassley said. “So the non-Indian doesn’t get a fair trial.”

Since “peer” is a synonym of “equal,” Grassley isn’t just suggesting that Native Americans would be racist toward white, he’s suggesting that Native Americans aren’t the equals of whites. Besides, even if he’s just having a problem understanding plain English, his reasoning is flawed — he assumes that non-whites can’t just whites fairly, but that the opposite isn’t true.

“A person who is tried in Vermont is likely to have an all-white jury because over 95 percent of Vermont is white,” TP’s Scott Keyes points out. “Similarly, a person who commits a crime in the Navajo Nation will face a jury of Native Americans because the population of the local community is made up of Navajo people. There is no reason to believe that Navajo jurors are any less impartial than white Vermonters, and Grassley is wrong to suggest otherwise.”

Dead wrong, if you ask me. Offensively wrong.

Stories to Watch: 2/8/12

Tacos! Now here's the news...

Under the Tea Party banner, Americans for Prosperity dumps $700,000 for Wisconsin ads touting recall target Scott Walker as the bestest governor in the history of best governors. Of course, AFP is just another name for the Koch brothers. You remember them, right? Yeah, it's a great idea to jump in and remember everyone of the most embarrassing moment of Scooter's career. Way to confirm what everyone already knows, guys.

The gathering of crazies known as the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) finally slithers about as far to the right as is possible. In inviting Peter Brimelow, the founder of VDARE, they've now embraced honest-to-god white nationalists with open arms. The next time some dumbass challenges you to give them an example of racism on the right, go ahead and point them toward this Nazi.

Even Chuck Grassley knows the insider trading bill passed by House Republicans is a joke.

I'm starting to think that Rush Limbaugh realizes he stands to make more money when Republicans are out of power. Listen to Rush, conservative voters. Do exactly as he says.

Congress' approval rating: 10%.

Remember how this morning I said that low turnout was a big problem for the GOP? Yeah, it turns out that low turnout is a big problem for the GOP.

Finally, Obama takes the lead in Virginia.

Freakin' hell it was warm here today. It got up to near 50. In Wisconsin. In January. This is wrong, wrong, wrong. Now here's the news...

Tonight's the big night in Florida and things do not look good for Noodles.

Speaking of Newt, he has some seriously goonish security agents.

David Brooks wrote something stupid again.

Rep. Allen West, carpetbagger.

Related: Rep. Allen West, boob.

Sen. Chuck Grassley is an ass.

Polling shows that House Republicans' hostage-taking/obstructionist strategy to win the hearts and minds of the American voter hasn't worked out too awfully well.

Finally, Remember how Romney won the Iowa caucuses -- except later it turned out that Santorum did? Heads roll.

Stories to Watch: 1/17/12

It was a wonderful day in Wisconsin (see below). Now here's the news...

It was a big day in my little city. Recall petitions were delivered to the capital -- a literal ton of them and accounting for more than one million signatures. A reporter for the Wisconsin State Journal says that the head of the Government Accountability Board (GAB) is having trouble finding workers to check the signatures, because one of the requirements is that the temps can't have signed the petition. That's how successful this petition drive has been. There are more such nuggets of info at WSJ's live blog of the filing, as well as a photo gallery here.

Chuck Grassley is a freakin' moron.

Handy tip: when you're trying to convince people you're not a hate group, it helps to refrain from acting exactly like a hate group.

Team Obama is already pricing TV ads.

Things that are bad to the GOP base: having a Mexican ancestry.

Rick Perry sparks an international incident by being stupid on the teevee. His campaign tries to clean up the mess, but it's pretty hopeless.

After realizing that not releasing his tax records created a bigger problem than it solved (i.e., the "Streisand Effect"), Mittens reveals his taxes are a ridiculously low 15% and says he'll release his records this spring.

Finally, Young Lee -- the co-founder of the Pinkberry yogurt chain -- is an awful, awful person.

Stories to Watch: 5/19/11

Drinking coffee. Life is good. Now here's the news...

Remember when filibustering a judicial nominee was the worst thing ever? So five minutes ago...

***

Another "wave election" coming? A new USA Today/Gallup poll finds that only 28% of voters think most members of Congress deserve reelection, "tying the low point in the trend set last year."

"The anti-incumbent mood that led to sweeping changes in Congress after the 2010 elections persists, and the accompanying change in House leadership has not fundamentally altered the way Americans view Congress," Gallup reports. "Thus, incumbents remain vulnerable heading into the 2012 election cycle, though perhaps not quite as vulnerable as in 2010, given that voters are now more inclined to say their own member deserves re-election."

It's a long time until election day.

President Obama calls for Israel to return to their 1967 borders and give a Palestinian state some breathing room. Needless to say, this was the worst thing ever.

Chuck Grassley is a prick.

California Republican congress critter Devin Nunes thinks another recession -- or even depression -- is something that "could benefit us."

In related news, there is no reality that the determined conservative mind can't dismiss: Dana Milbank introduces us to the "default deniers."

Speaking of deniers, yet another GOP moron tries to tell townhall-goers that oil subsidies do not exist.

A brief moment of rightwing talk radio goodness. Newt to Limbaugh: "And by the way, it was not a reference to Paul Ryan. There was no reference to Paul Ryan in that answer." Limbaugh to Newt: "Well then what did you apologize to him about?" Logic was then taken out and shot.

Tim Pawlenty was an awful Governor of Minnesota.

Finally, be prepared for the zombie apocalypse.

News Roundup for 3/25/11

Empty chair
The GOP candidate qualified to be president

-Headline of the day-
"Grassley on the GOP Field: 'Only Two or Three of Them are Qualified to be President.'"

Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley spoke to reporters yesterday, apparently to make the super-important announcement that he had no idea who the hell he was going to back for GOP nominee in 2012.

Part of his problem; the GOP field sucks. "[O]nly two or three of them are qualified to be president..." he said."It wouldn't do me much good to back somebody that won in Iowa if they can't carry on the campaign elsewhere."

Which leaves the question; who exactly is it that Chuck believes is qualified? "Is it Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Tea Party)?" the report asks. "Reality TV and real estate star Donald Trump? Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, who has been struggling with foreign policy lately? Healthcare champion Mitt Romney? Or, maybe, Sarah Palin?"

Well, when you put it that way, it is a little bit of a mystery, isn't it? (Iowa Democratic Party)

-Speaking of which...-
Shelly Bachmann once again displays her masterful grasp of the facts:
