Mitt steps on his own messaging again

No More Mr. Nice Blog:

Verbatim Mitt Romney, in a dull rehash of his economic philosophy in The Wall Street Journal titled “What I Learned at Bain Capital”:

A broad message emerges from my Bain Capital days: A good idea is not enough for a business to succeed. It requires a talented team, a good business plan and capital to execute it. That was true of companies we helped start, like Staples and the Bright Horizons child-care provider, and several of the struggling companies we helped turn around, like the Brookstone retailer and the contact-lens maker Wesley Jessen….

My business experience confirmed my belief in empowering people. For example, at Bain Capital we bought Accuride, a company that made truck rims and wheels, because we saw untapped potential there. We instituted performance bonuses for the management team, which had a dramatic impact. The managers made the plants more productive, and the company started growing, adding 300 jobs while Bain was involved.

People build their businesses without any help from anyone and, by the way, thanks to all the people who helped me build Bain — I couldn’t have done it without you.

And that’s the problem with demagoguing the “you didn’t build that” comment — you can’t possibly talk about business in even the most abstract sense without contradicting your own argument. Mitt seems to be having an ongoing problem with logical consistency lately.

Stories to Watch: 7/18/12

Finally got a soaking rain up here -- got dark as night and came down in sheets. Also, I'll probably be out most of the day tomorrow, so I'll probably let posting slide. Now here's the news...

I don't know what's in Mitt's tax returns, but it must be really bad. Check out this lede from Ryan grim and Abby Huntsman (emphasis mine); "Mitt Romney has been determined to resist releasing his tax returns at least since his bid for Massachusetts governor in 2002 and has been confident that he will never be forced to do so, several current and former Bain executives tell The Huffington Post. Had he thought otherwise, say the sources based on their longtime understanding of Romney, he never would have gone forward with his run for president." Wow.

I really, really want to know who this dopey "conservative blogger" is.

You may not have thought it was possible, but Romney's Bain argument gets even weaker.

Meanwhile, Mittens gets on board with debunked rightwing black helicopter conspiracy theories.

How to be a pundit.

John McCain has apparently had enough of Shelly Bachmann's foolishness.

Finally, Americans still think it's all Bush's fault.

News Roundup for 7/16/12

The truth is, Mitt's just forgotten where he put his tax returns

-Headline of the Day-
"Romney comes up with a tax-return spin."

Mittens is really having an awful time right now. He's being forced to distance himself from Bain Capital -- which is pretty much his only case for being elected president -- and then there's this whole thing with his tax returns. He's keeping like 90% of them secret, which even conservatives say is dumb. And when asked why his finances are such a big freakin' secret, the best answer Romney can come up with is "because."

Or, that used to be his answer. But he went to Fox News to test pilot his new answer. "The Obama people keep on wanting more and more and more," he told the nitwits at Fox & Friends. "More things to pick through, more things for their opposition research to try make a mountain out of and to distort and to be dishonest about."

"I'm delighted Romney is now saying something in response to the question, but I'm having a tough time wrapping my head around this one," writes Steve Benen. "He's going to keep his tax returns secret and hidden from public view because... Obama might find stuff?"

So basically, Mitt's argument is that he can't release all his tax returns because there's bad stuff in there. Which -- not coincidentally -- is Team Obama's argument for why he should.

Maybe he'd be better off going back to "because." (Maddow Blog, with video)

Stories to Watch: 5/21/12

The Cory Booker non-story, explained concisely.

Limbaugh's ratings post-slut comment were not so hot.

State of Hawaii to Arizona's birther Secretary of State: We are so tired of this bullshit. The email exchange behind all of this is well worth your time.

Facebook's shares aren't doing so well.

The conservative media start a race war. Luckily, it exists only in their imaginations. Bonus fun: Ed Kilgore on how incoherent and insane the whole thing is.

Obama says he's not letting up on Romney's Bain past.

Paul Ryan's stopped trying to make any damned sense at all.

Me talk like conservatives now.

Are squirrels possessed by gay demons?

Just a reminder; rightwing "historian" David Barton sells the purest horseshit known to man.

Finally, if the current escalation in numbers is any indication, by the time November rolls around, Mittens will be claiming to have created about a trillion jobs -- give or take a billion.

Stories to Watch: 5/16/12

Any pretense to democracy in the Republican primaries just died.

People think Mike Huckabee's a nice guy. People are wrong.

Kucinich is done for this cycle.

Shareholders sue JPMorgan.

House Republicans waste everyone's time by passing their doomed "Go Ahead and Slap Around Lesbians and Immigrants" act.

George W. Bush will publish a book on how to build an awesome economy. No, you read that right.

A phone interview with Howard Dean ends unexpectedly.

Mitt Romney's pretty sure people will buy the argument that Bain Capital created jobs. Now, if he could just decide how many he wants to pretend it created...

A new poll shows Obama and Romney in a dead heat in Wisconsin -- illustrating what a super-great idea it would be for the DNC to let the grassroots recall network wither on the vine.

Finally, Mittens gets expert advice on how to act like a human.

News Roundup for 1/16/12

Robber barons and tycoons
Romney's peer group

-Headline of the Day-
"Big banks have picked their candidate, and it's Romney."

Mitt Romney has been trying to convince everyone that he's just a reg'lar Joe. He tries to strike up conversations with the riff-raff by guessing their ethnicity and discussing LEED certification of the local hotels. Rumor has it that he's instructed his valet to put his pants on him one leg at a time. He's done everything short of wearing an "I'm Not Out of Touch" t-shirt everywhere he goes.

Well thank God no one's buying it. If they did, Mittens wouldn't be getting that sweet, sweet campaign cash from the 1%. According to the report, "Employees at the five largest U.S. banks by assets, including Bank of America Corp. and Wells Fargo & Co., had given Romney about $600,000 through the first three quarters of 2011, according to the most recent filings available from the Federal Election Commission... Romney received more from employees of those top five banks than all the other candidates combined."

That ought to keep him in spats and top hats for a while. And all that slash-and-burn, fire-all-the-employees-and-sell-off-the-company Bain stuff in Romney's past? Well, that's not a liability to the crème de la crème of the Wall Street world -- it's an asset. "As the former head of Bain Capital... he comes from their world," we're told.

The next time you see Mittens eating pies with the locals in a folksy, one-of-the-guys photo-op, keep that in mind. (McClatchy)

Stories to Watch: 1/13/12

We have snow. Finally. Now here's the news...

I've added "Bain Capital" to the Superfeed. I try to keep the topical slots to stories that have legs and Bain is definitely something that's not going away soon. So now the two topicals are Bain and the Wisconsin Recall. The recall ought to last until spring -- depending on how it turns out, perhaps even into the summer. If the recall is successful, the next administration's first steps will be worth paying attention to.

As expected, the Citizens United ruling has Super PACs trying to buy elections.

Tennessee state Rep. Richard Floyd is an awful, awful, awful excuse for a human being.

The "Stop Romney" contingent of evangelicals and Tea Party Republicans are having a little trouble getting their act together.

Mittens is not a trustworthy fellow.

Perry, Huntsman, Gingrich, and Santorum will all be off the Virginia ballot after a lawsuit they all joined failed. You know what Republicans usually call a suit that fails? A frivolous lawsuit.

Mitt's dog Seamus finally becomes a campaign issue -- and a faux childrens' book.

Finally, House Tea Party's transition from political powerhouse to collection of irrelevant nutjobs is very nearly complete.

Stories to Watch: 1/10/12

Big doin's in New Hampshire tonight, so I'll keep this short. I probably don't have your attention. Now here's the news...

Polling shows that Stephen Colbert would beat Jon Huntsman in South Carolina.

Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum all vow to bravely face America's most pressing crisis -- that of nekkid ladies on those internets.

New Hampshire voters will get a chance to vote for Herman Cain and "Dick" Perry tonight. I'm hoping Dick gets more votes that Rick, because that'd be too hilarious.

Ron Paul thinks Mitt Romney's record of slash-and-burn vulture capitalism with Bain is great.

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists bumps their "Doomsday Clock" up to five minutes to midnight.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett (not to be confused with the other space cadet) wants to kick a bunch of people off food stamps -- mostly because he's a Republican and an awful excuse for a human being.

SOPA-backers are seeing their reelection prospects get a bit tougher.

Finally, a short film on Mitt Romney and Bain Capital -- financed by Gingrich-backers -- sounds absolutely brutal.

News Roundup for 1/10/12

New RNC logo

-Headline of the Day-
"Republicans Hand Democrats a Populist Issue."

Republicans handed Democrats a gift today, by way on confirming one of the worst GOP stereotypes. In a fourth circuit court case, the Republican National Committee filed an amicus brief [PDF] arguing that candidates for office should be able to get that sweet, sweet corporate cash straight from the corporations themselves.

"Especially if Romney is the nominee, expect this to be rolled into Romney's 'corporations are people, my friend' line, the Bain Capital stuff, and the recent 'I like to fire people gaffe,' with Occupy undertones, for Democrats (or their super PAC surrogates) to make an anti-corporate, Populist message for Obama's reelection," writes Rick Hasen of the Election Law Blog.

In fact, since the RNC basically makes the "corporations are people" argument in the brief, I'd say this was a pretty sure bet. They might as well slap a "for sale" sign on the GOP logo, because the RNC is indicating that they want to sell the party really, really bad. (Political Wire)

-Shovel-Ready-

Don't worry New Hampshire, it's almost over. (Time)

-Bonus HotD-
"Heckler askes Romney: 'Are you going to fire the baby?'"

A Romney critic blows the obligatory baby picture photo op. Experts say this is the most embarrassing infant-related campaign incident since Chester Arthur confused the "shake hands, kiss baby" routine and had to be forcibly stopped from shaking babies. (Raw Story)

Stories to Watch: 12/19/11

No roundup today and I doubt there will be one for the rest of the week. Holiday prep, combined with Walker recall work, leaves me a little squeezed for time and the roundup is nothing if not time consuming. On the plus side, I'm making a buttload of sourdough pancakes that I'll freeze and give away like Christmas cookies. This place smells awesome. I'm almost done with everyone's, then I'll make a batch for myself. Now here's the news...

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il's condition is downgraded to Kim Jong Dead.

CNN has a poll out showing that the Newt Gingrich fad is doing what fads do.

Stuff that makes your blood boil; after making a killing killing jobs, Mitt Romney still makes money off Bain Capital -- and probably pays a lower tax rate on it than you do.

Nate Silver says Ron Paul is actually leading in Iowa.

Massachusetts GOP Sen. Scott Brown -- already in a tough reelection battle against Elizabeth Warren -- is not happy with the way John Boehner totally screwed up the payroll tax cut extension.

On a related note, Tea Party Rep. Phil Gingrey is a clown.

And speaking of the Tea Party, remember how it's just crazy to suggest there's any racism among the 'baggers? Yeah, about that...

Rick Perry is embarrassed.

Finally, Sarah Palin is still in denial about the expiration date on her fifteen minutes of fame.
